Whoops, I accidentally put three cent silver instead of $3 gold. What I meant in the title was $3 gold.
It is a shame, but it certainly has been harshly cleaned to me. I'm not very familiar with these whatsoever, but if the cleaning was not present I think it would grade XF or possibly low AU.
I hate to see the damage the cleaning has caused but it's still a nice little coin. Not sure how it would be graded though. Bruce
The more I look at it I go with dwhiz at EF details. At first I thought maybe AU but since then. have changed my mind. Bruce
I’m glad to hear that I was in the ballpark. I was between XF-45 and AU-50 details (cleaned) on the coin. Thanks for the input!
I'll give you three cents in silver for it. Still, technically, she's put together fine, make that, extra fine, she's a handsome coin.
It is probably worth getting it authenticated. Although the piece, if genuine, which I think it is, would get a "details" grade. There are collectors who would like to have it. Certified genuine, it's probably a few hundred dollars. The nice ones are very expensive now. Here is an 1888 Three Dollar Gold from the PCGS "Coin Facts" site.
