I am sure you know as well as I that with this type of material, problem or not, being slabbed can make a great difference, even if only in how liquid the coin is. If you can convince him to trust you and wish to do so, go for it.As for the coin's condition, I would not expect it to grade cleanly based only on the info provided (and reading between the lines), but it is also my humble opinion that there is a fair amount of southern gold out there in clean holders that shouldn't be, so take as you will.
Hopefully someone will reported this thief, ( electrician ) to ebay . people shouldn't take what isn't theirs, I've seen lots of posts about coin dealer that that rip of people, so whats the differences here, again, a thief, is a thief . this guy could lose his job, and go to jail, where he belongs . This is just my feeling ....
That is assuming a lot though. I do agree he could possibly be a thief, but there are situations where he possibly could be the legal owner now. Did the owners of the house say you can keep what you find?
I don't trust the coin (too well struck) and I don't trust the electrician. May as well be a Nigerian prince as far as I'm concerned. Get the coin certified by PCGS (I'll be able to look up the SP picture for verification), show me a picture of the coin taken today with a local newspaper and proof of clear title, then we'll talk.
I agree I do not trust the coin unless it gets graded. I do not know how to verify he is the rightful owner though.
He has no permission to "search" the house other than moving stuff in his way to do his job.Stealing someone's coins is criminal act and I'd stay away from this guy/piece like the plague,he may "like" your stuff some day too!
When something like this is offered by a eBay buyer a beware Plus if eBay happens to read the email if sent to eBay email address your selling could be Stopped. I would not do anything it . If sent you the email thru eBay that a big Red flag. Sounds to good to be true offen today is the fact.
Not really a question for me at all. If I even suspected a coin to be stolen or ill-gotten, I wouldn't buy it.
I would also think now, cointalk has some responsibility for theses coins, and should contact ebay about this issue, but I could be wrong ...
The whole thing smells bad. A guy just happens to find a coin and just happens to notify you? and now maybe it is stolen? This deal has "bad idea" written all over it. proceed with extreme caution.
I would not touch it with a 10 ft pole. I just do not trust stories like this. And make sure you do everything thru ebay messaging - if you do buy make sure you use paypal with a credit card.
PS - the only negative I ever go was from an electrician who found a coin in a house. The coin I received had a wire brush used on it - the photos on the auction was manipulated. The seller was extremely rude - not long after he was no longer a registered user. I was his first negative - but several more followed after mine.
This really rings a bell for me . I used to keep 10 slabs in a white Intercept Shield box , up in the rafters of my basement . I had my cousins son do some electrical work (small world isn't it ) well he brought a helper to help pull wires . Well to make a long story short one of the boxes of 10 was missing . Lucky for me there was only about $500 of coins in the stolen box . So This electrician took my coins and even though they weren't my best coins that I had at home I get sick when I think about it . And for those wondering , I never reported the coins missing as I was sure my cousins kid didn't do it and I didn't want to start family trouble over $500 . The bottom line is this guy stole my coins . I'd definitely find out who has ownership . In a wall or in some rafters they're just words .
He just sent me a few new pictures... I really do think this coin has a shot at grading pretty well! He still is undecided whether to send it to me for grading, or have a local guy do it.
Give it up, Rick. With what little info we've been provided by the OP, the most that can reasonably be said about this situation is that it's questionable. Beyond this, the OP does not have to listen to any advice given him. He's a big boy and can make his own decisions. As for the coin itself, especially with being given better photos, he should be able to, with a little effort, come to a reasonable conclusion about authenticity, and put any concerns over the strike quality to rest. After which all that remains is if he wishes to deal with this person, and is a personal decision that really is none of our business.
