Just saw the Mint email about these. I'm not sure it's the best design for high relief treatment, and I'm pretty sure I'm NOT interested in buying at Mint prices - but I'll admit to some curiosity. Anybody ready to pull the trigger?

I thought - How much is this going to cost?

If you have to ask, you can't afford it :woot:.

Those big fat rims look odd to me but it does have the rim lettering. Out of my price range for sure anyway.

Durned tootin'. The price of said item remains unposted at this time but I'm sure it will be considerably and astronomically overpriced. I'm a sucker for 'mint' stuff but I'm passing on this offering.

I really want one and could make it happen. I keep thinking about how many coins I could have on my list for what this one will be. At current spot gold I believe the price will be around $3750 on these. With gold high and the premiums high, the cost is absurd.
Heard they're also auctioning off 230th privy marked versions, straight from the mint. So those will go for insane money. Would be more tempting if they were mixed in like they did with the silver. They'll be worth a lot more on secondary market. Will it last forever? Who knows.

I gotta see this. How the devil are they going to do that? Totally unheard of. Our goober friends turning into an auction site? What's the BP? (devil)

No privy marks on the gold issue.

Interesting idea, but I agree @jeffB poor design choice for high relief treatment. The draped bust or gold turban head designs I would say are much better suited, or even a liberty cap, (didn't they kind of do this for the head of 95?). Do a high relief turban head in gold and limit the premium to around $500-600 and I would probably sign up for one.

The images make it look like a piedfort. ("A piedfort is an unusually thick coin, often exactly twice the normal weight and thickness of other coins of the same diameter and pattern.") Are other gold coins from the mint like this or is it just the images?

It's normal for the high-relief issues.

Thanks, I don't follow the mint stuff much.

I am going to try to order one. It will have a hefty premium from the mint for sure. It's one of the few coins I am buying directly from the mint this year. It's a pretty unique offering from the mint and I love the classic design. I am glad they did it in proof!

I think they shouldn’t have used the design of an old silver dollar for a modern gold coin.

They did the same with the 2016s and they were a success. I have all three of them in my US Type. 24k gold looks really nice. With the drop in gold prices they will be slightly less than they would have been last week. A $50 price point drop costs the mint $875k on these. I think gold has moved down enough to cause two price drops at this point so they could have made 1.7 million more on them had the release been last week.

I agree the 2016s look nice. I bought all three in the aftermarket, (I think $1300 total, I liked when gold was cheaper), but those were more intricate designs. This one is plain and simple, cool in its time but kind of boring for a high relief gold issue IMHO.

Gold just dropped below another price point. Should be another $50 cheaper. Be interesting to see the price point on these. Still TBD with less than 24 hrs to go.

Yeah, probably not going to be able to convince myself to pull the trigger at that price. :(

At about a $1,100 premium over spot, this has got to be one of the most expensive US Mint issues I've ever seen. Maybe they are being influenced by the after market for these things.
