Honestly, I am surprised it did not sell for more, since it was listed as a 1841, and not 1841-C. 1841 would be worth a fortune. I guess I could widen the hole a bit? Hehe. I agree the hole is ugly and distracting, but I am just thrilled to finally own a C mint $2 1/2. I would agree with you on the price. I have rarer coins, but C minted gold seems to always sell high, as everyone wants one, and there are not enough to go around.
Frankly (maybe too frankly) I'd never have bid on a damaged coin like that.......I don't collect them and the Phantom 'C' does nothing for me. But if OP likes it that's all that matters......
And this is why I feel like a got it for a steal. I paid about $185 for it. Can't beat that for a C minted gold coin! People saw the hole and didn't bother to check it out. I saw the C, and my max bid was a lot higher than the sale price.
I'd say it's the size of the coin not the drill bit. IMO, this was drilled to put on a chain. This is a small coin, so the hole is relatively big.
It's a difficult coin.....I collect gold coins. ,alway watching them.....my guess,it would go,as,high as 700 on a,straight eBay auction.
You'd may get more for it....in F10 condition it goes for 825 retail.....coin looks 25 30 range. Say 1800 if graded out at 30. As a raw not less than 40 % of that value with the damage......so 700 would be a fair price....
Actually....I've been watching this coin for a week now....it.s pretty comparable to your coin......it looks as though or has a harsh polish on it.....yours looks a pretty natural vf.....only the damage... http://www.ebay.com/itm/262138187773?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2648&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
After looking at the coin closely.....it may be a fake..... http://www.ebay.com/itm/1847-C-AU-2...272049?hash=item567e9af571:g:HYMAAOSwLVZV3jcC Here the C on a 1847..... Located well above the D....on yours not there Could only be an 1841 P. Then. A few things don't appears quite right in the photo....at the drill hole near the There,is,something....also some gouges.....the shield doesn't appear quite right....
So let me get this straight.... you're comparing a 47-C to the OP's 41-C and using what differences you see as your "evidence" that it "may be fake"? First, the reverse used on the 47 (also used in 46 and 48) is NOT the same one used in 41 (and 42 as well). The mintmark was punched by hand, which easily and absolutely explains any differences you think you may see. While it is certainly wise to compare to known genuine examples, it is a worthless and potentially harmful exercise unless apples to apples. Also, there is a zero chance that the coin in question is a 41-P/little princess. With all due respect, if you indeed collect these coins, it would be wise to invest your efforts into further educating yourself before making any(more) purchases. This isn't meant to be mean or rude, and is only a sincere suggestion for your benefit. Coins of this type are simply too expensive to make assumptions on, particularly when buying raw. I stand by my original assessment in regards to the coin's authenticity.
Like he pointed out.. different dates, so cannot compare. And it is not a P, as you can see the C mint mark.
I did manage to find a 1841c http://www.ebay.com/itm/1841-C-2-50...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 With this I can see where the C should be....and its on the coin.... I also saw where you bought this coin......the ad was listed wrongly.....and the photos were terrible......no wonder it went for that price. Can't even see the C in his photo. It was a good grab
Whoever drilled a hole in that coin needs to be flogged. Some people have absolutely no appreciation for what they have.
this is what I said at the end of the thread....the C was not so obvious in the photo.... "I did manage to find a 1841c http://www.ebay.com/itm/1841-C-2-50...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 With this I can see where the C should be....and its on the coin.... I also saw where you bought this coin......the ad was listed wrongly.....and the photos were terrible......no wonder it went for that price. Can't even see the C in his photo. It was a good grab" there is no confusion here that I admit the coin is real.... as far as the melt on the rouble...you are correct....the melt is in the 250 neighborhood....my mistake...I have about (5) 5 rouble slabbed coins...and I remember that when I bought them I calculated melt at around 200....so I doubled it for the 10 rouble.....but gold was around mid 1500's at that time.... but the coin wasnt determined as a fake.....two people question the lettering...one said fake.....looking at it still doesn't look all that bad....I'm not convinced it's a fake....which brings up another point....you're trying to ascertain the authenticity of a coin from a photo.....for a bad fake...it's easy to see...but since I and probably most here haven't seen all the fakes like a grader would....you just can't say for certain if a coin is fake or real from a photograph.... you really cant see the luster well on a photo.....some photos are a bit blurry...the lighting is difficult for a coin to show properly.....when you get the coin in hand it doesn't look a whole lot like the photo.....
Well, I'm seeing VF details, making this about a $1500 coin in righteous condition. Kirkuleez probably has the street value about right, maybe more in front of the right audience.
