Sounds like you're gonna go for it, eh? (congrats) ... curious, will it remain in its cramped, plastic prison?
You need to develop "selective blindness" for minor defects or you'll pass on some really nice things in this hobby. I use a 30x loupe for a lot of inspecting(to see ods/dds ect.) and would pass on most all pieces as they look terrible at high resolution so I stop and view in 20/20 and then judge them for purchase....
I LIKE that Sestertius, beef1020! I am focused on Roman Republic silver, but every time I see great posting of other ancients, I begin to salivate over absconding other types of ancients! Hey folks, since you all are talking about grading ancients - and I see many of my favorite experts here... I am trying to find a good "How to Grade Ancient Coins". I see a few results via google search. However, since there seems to be a real concentration of experts here; where is a good reference site, book, etc. (or posting on CoinTalk) for grading ancients?
A couple of thoughts. Nice Patina, as Doug said the scratches are under the patina so they pass muster in my opinion. The coin is obviously not XF, more like VF tops. Finally I hate that it is now in a slab, if it were mine I would "liberate" it from its' plastic prison.
Thanks, really appreciated. I was very excited about the coin but there is a limit on price. There will be more.
Thank you! I had just found and saved this page yesterday, so I am glad others feel it is a good grading site.
