May 13th, 1940 Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands leaves her country after the Nazi invasion. The Queen’s plans were not to leave the Netherlands, but to go to Zeeland; however, this southern province was so brutally attacked that she was forced into exile. She went to Great Britain, where she was received by King George VI. Wilhelmina and her family also went to Canada, where people were surprised by her simplicity. During the exile, she organized resistance and broadcast messages to the Dutch people over Radio Oranje. The Queen could finally return to the Netherlands following the end of World War II. May 15th, 1800 George III of the UK survives an assassination attempt George III was at the Drury Lane Theatre when James Hadfield attempted to shoot him. This attempt was not the first, but the second King George endured. Hadfield was acquitted of attempted murder by reason of insanity since no political interest motivated him, but delusions of the apocalypse. May 16th, 218 Elagabalus proclaimed emperor after a revolt in Emesa At sunrise on May 16th, 218, Elagabalus was declared emperor, after his mother declared publicly that he was the illegitimate son of Caracalla. He was fourteen years old then, and was Roman Emperor until 222. His reign is remembered mainly for sexual scandal and religious controversy.
The first Denarius posted above is not in the best of conditions. However, the reverse legend "SACERD DEI SOLIS ELAGAB" is quite interesting and basically reads: the priest of the sun god baal; refering to Elagabalus' role as priest of the Syrian cult of Baal.
Awesome set-up ... thanks Bing!! Cheers brother ... here are a couple of examples: Elagabalus: Tetradrachm: ... and a good ol' Denarius ...
Maybe someone else will take the incentive and post a Wilhelmina piece... I may actually have one of those
Bring it, Jo Money!! This Week In History from VCoins is definitely "First come, first serve" (then it's a dog-pile, if anybody else also has an example) :hail:
