Nice Vitellius, Orfew Here are my denarii. Vitellius. AD 69. AR Denarius. Rome mint. Struck circa April-December AD 69. Obv: Laureate head right Rev: Libertas standing facing, head right, holding pileus and scepter. RIC I 105; RSC 47. VITELLIUS. 69 AD. AR Denarius. Lugdunum (Lyon) mint. Obv: Laureate head right, globe at point of bust Rev: Mars walking left, holding spear and standard. RIC I 51 This is a relatively scarce coin. This one is unfortunately, badly corroded. VITELLIUS, 69 AD. AR Denarius. Rome mint. Obv: Bare head Rev: Victory seated holding patera and palm. RIC.88.
This must have been an incredibly well-struck coin when it left the mint, in order for the obverse legends to have held up that well under what is clearly considerable circulation and wear. Vitellius' portrait is as distinctive on this coin as it is on most EF examples. This is quite a coin.
Great coins all @Eduard that CONSENSVS EXERCITVVM is really tremendous My only Vitellius : Vitellius, Denarius - 011 Rome mint, July - December 20, AD69 A VITELLIVS GERMAN IMP TR P, Laureate head of Vitellius right XV VIR SACR FAC, Tripod-lebes with dolphin lying right on top and raven standing right below 3.43 gr, 16-18 mm Ref : RCV # 2201var, Cohen cf # 110 et suiv, RIC I # 86 (this example illustrated in Wildwinds) Q
My second coin of Vitellius was an aureus, with the common Libertas reverse. The obverse portrait, however, was very different from my denarius -- sort of a deer-in-the-headlights look: VITELLIUS 69 A.D. AV Aureus (7.33 g.) Rome Apr. - Dec. 69 A.D. RIC 80 A VITELLIVS GERMAN IMP TR P laureate head r. Rev. LIBERTAS RESTITVTA Libertas standing facing, head r., holding pileus in r. hand and long rod in left
Very nice Vitellius collection @Eduard, He's my sole example Denarius, Concordia reverse, Rome 69 AD, 18mm, 2.63gm, RIC 1 90.
