@Bing Ain't the internet great. I found coins similar to yours with a close match to the monogram and condition of your piece in the $45 $60 range.
Welcome! And my Mo-in-law lives with us also... I still enjoy Ancients... perhaps it has been the best diversion for me!
I don't even know how to load a link! I just went to Google and typed: Thessalonia Ae19 two goats. ...and images. Some said Thessalonia , Macedonia AE19
I am resurrecting this thread because like Bing, I too got a couple of goats butting heads and likewise got a little confused while trying to attribute them. While poking around the Web, I came across this thread. This thread as it is pretty much clarifies things (Barry Murphy’s post does it succinctly), but I thought I would show both types of “butting goats” together in a single photo. One is from Amphipolis (Artemis Tauropolos obv. on the left) and the other from Thessalonica (Zeus obv. on the right). They are roughly the same size and same general fabric (the deep-dish flan that seems to be typical of Macedonian AEs from this era). Amphipolis, Macedonia Æ19 under Philip V to Perseus (c. 187-168 B.C.) Diademed head of Artemis Tauropoulos (or Apollo) right / AMΦ-IΠO-ΛI-TΩ-N across fields, two goats standing on hind legs, fighting, monograms ΦΕ left and ΓA right. SNG ANS 114-117; SG 1394. (7.56 grams / 19 mm) Thessalonica, Macedonia Æ19 (c. 187 - 168 B.C.) Laureate head of Zeus right / [Θ]E / [Σ]ΣA[ΛO] / NIKHΣ, Two goats butting heads. Moushmov 6595; SNG Cop 350. (6.94 grams / 19 mm) I found quite a few examples of both type in auction records, Vcoins, etc. But condition is a real problem with these – they were used hard.
@Bing that is a solid buy for $5! I’m gonna need you to give me your sources...and stop bidding on them so I can I win them
This is an old thread. Four years old to be exact. I'd be willing to bet I'd have a hard time finding this kind of bargain again.
Bargain indeed! Here's an Amphipolis with Zeus obverse from CNG - sold for $60. The obverse is pretty decent, but reverse not so much: https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=145858 Amphipolis with Artemis (like mine) from Vcoins for $45. https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/ae...is_macedonia_18734_bc_ae_22/6427/Default.aspx
