Thanks TIF ! I love the coinage that was produced at the mints in the vast Holy Roman Empire. The mint masters/ die makers produced truly artistic coinage from 1500 -1800. However, the Swiss Cantons also were right up there. Here is my 1/4 Dukaten gem from Basel struck circa 1750.
i got them at an estate sale without any info on them..i also have a right hand knuckle-under gauntlet and a etched sword hand protector.. the best i could come close to is the cuirass and hand guard is either Spanish or Portuguese and the gauntlet is German. i bought them as display and conversation pieces
As a teen, I ounce had a crush on a third cousin (she was quite attractive as I remember). But when me Mum found out, she put a stop to that saying something to the fact of one cannot marry a relative. Any children produced would be condemned by God to be misshapen. Now I'm from West "By God" Virginia and we all in-breed don't we?
I suppose such matters are watched more closely by some groups than others but I could not name a single third cousin of mine. Third cousins have a great-great-grandparent as their most recent common ancestor. I have records of my mother's side of the family back to the 1600's but neither of my father's parents knew their parents names. At third cousin level, I could be related to half the people in the county and never suspect it.
Here he doesn't look so ugly - I think: AR Thaler 1692, K B = Körmöcbánya (Kremnitz) mint, 46 mm, 28.64 g Ref: Davenport 3262; KM 214.3; Huszar 1372; Obverse: LEOPOLDVS D • G • RO • I • S • AVG • GER • HV • BO • REX •, laureate, and armored bust right with lion shoulder, titles divided by small Hungarian coat of arms and Madonna with Child Reverse: • ARCHIDVX • AVS • DVX • BVR • MAR • MOR • CO • TY • 16 92, crowned Imperial double eagle holding scepter and sword, Hungary-Bohemia coat-of-arms within Order Chain on breast, K B across fields
