Last time it was listed as a 1798.
This link says it is a lot of 26 coins. I think as long as he is not selling it as a 1799 he's not being deceptive. The title does not mention a 1799 coin.
It's true that it is prominent in the photo. But if he was forthcoming about
the date being wrong in an earlier auction, I think he won't change that
    stance in a buyer/seller e mail.

Agreed but an honest seller would reveal the 1799 was altered. He knows fully that’s the case. It is 26 coins but there is no way they are worth that. Most appear to be culls.

Current bid is $1451.+ Culls are getting expensive these days.

The bidders are 2 types of people.
    1. Uninformed who think they're capitalizing on a seller mistake.
    2. Unscrupulous dealers who will sell it for 6k to uneducated buyers.

It just ended at $5825 with 66 bids from 20 bidders.

The winning bid came in at just under $225 a coin. This auction is a train wreck for either option In my opinion.

I was talking with a guy yesterday about an 1858 seated half dollar. Holed and in a details ANACS slab. He was asking 1500 for it in VF25.
I told him that I would offer around 85 to 90 bucks for it.
He strait told me that it was a wanted year and that $400 was as low as he could go. Honestly why do some dealers try to peddle this nonsense?

It pains me/amazes me to see how people are willing to dispense with such amounts without at least checking first to see if what they are buying is genuine.
    Incredible.

Doesn't sound like a dealer to me... sounds like a seller.

Like I stated earlier, it could've been bought by a dealer who has an uninformed buyer to flip it to.

Wow, Even 85-90 is way too high.

I agree, but to my thoughts it seems that most online are just sellers and not true dealers. There are definitely exceptions.

If you ask me you were too generous. A holes vf details 1858 half to me is pretty undesirable unless someone is collecting holed coins a common date readily available in all grades. An s mint would be more interesting though

Demonstrates the importance of knowing and trusting (earned trust) your dealer as a novice collector, even with many years of collecting experience. The counterfeits and altered coins are too decieving these days.
Now that I am retired, I can spend more time on my collection and I appreciate the knowledge shared by many experts here.

    You can say that again.
From what I can see that lot is worth 5 to 8 times less than what the high bidder paid...oh boy.

He does list it as a 1798. But that pile of caca is worth maybe $600
