Hi everyone, Just thought I'd share my recent win from today's Roma auction. While I usually don't post until I've received the coin, I am just too excited to share!!! I've wanted a double sestertius of Decius ever since I saw an example in the coin collection at the ROM. I will update the post with my own photograph once I receive it. Here it is...... Trajan Decius (249-251 AD) AE Double Sestertius Obv: IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right. Rev: VICTORIA AVG, Victory advancing right, holding wreath and palm branch; S-C across fields. Weight: 30.66 grams RIC 126a Share anything Decius/double sestertius/or both!!!!
OK, now after a cold shower I calmed down and can say this coin is fantastic. It sure is a dream coin, and in quite good condition I won't show again my Divi series, everyone would kick me out of CT in the end but here are two doubles Postumus : Postumus, Double sestertius - Cologne mint, AD 261 IMP C M CASS LAT POSTVMVS P F AVG, Radiate bust of Postumus right LAETITIA AVG, Galley travelling left 18.12 gr Ref : Cohen #177, RCV #11049 Aurelian and Severina Aurelian and Severina, Double sestertius - Rome mint AD 274-275 IMP AVRELIANVS AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust of Aurelian right SEVERINA AVG, diademed and draped bust of Severina right, on crescent 11.18 gr Ref : Cohen # 1, RIC # 2, RCV # 11696 Q
@Cucumbor Wonderful coins! I had no idea that Aurelian minted double sestertii...what a cool coin!!!! Especially since it has Severina on the reverse!
Whether those are double sestertii or dupondii is still disputed by scholars. I think (I'm not a scholar in any way, I just think ) they are double sestertii because Aurelian's middle bronzes are usually called sestertii and in the 7-8 gr weight range. But they might be asses aswell. Anyway, I like it to be a double sestertius, so it is (I told you I'm not a scholar, rather a dreamer ) Q
Great coin @Romancollector ! Congratulations. Unfortunately i was outbid on all my targets in this Roma e-sale. Better luck next time.
IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG - laureate and cuirassed bust of Trajan Decius right, seen from behind DACIA - Dacia, wearing robe reaching feet, standing left, holding Dacian Draco battle standard in right hand; S C in exergue Sestertius, Rome AD 250-251 (1st officina, 2nd-3rd emissions) 17.86gr / 28,62 mm / 1h RIC 112 b, Cohen 18, Sear 9399, Banti 1 (22 specimens), Hunter 32
Awesome score, Romcoll! (That's my official suggestion for your nickname. We already have an RC. ) I expect that coin is on a lot of wantlists here... certainly on mine! Meanwhile I have to content myself with a much smaller radiate bronze (a dupondius, of course): I do have a double sest for Postumus:
Hey Everyone, Just thought I'd share my own photograph of my Decius now that it has arrived!! I'm still waiting on a few more coins from other auctions, so I will be doing a top 10-15 list sometime soon!
