    Hobbies Are Never-Ending

All hobbies are addictive. There is no end to coin collecting as something new and better is always coming out. Stamp collecting, memorabilia,DVDs, CDs, etc collecting are the same story. Besides needing to be wealthy, where do you store your collection if you have limited space?

So you're saying you want to see a larger range for F & EF grades ? The MS grade actually has the largest range with 11 grades.

The ANA Grading Guide does have an actual recognized standard for VF30. The NGC & PCGS guides have recognized standards for all the grades as well.

I believe Photograde is the the only guide that does not. Photograde also does not have standards for anything above MS60. Which is why I've never been in favor of using the book.

I'd have to say coin dealers, peoples who make a living off of selling coins, and coin dealers.

ok,may have just been a misunderstanding on my part, however i still think that 20 points is too far a reach in the scale to not be assigned a name for the grade when the name can mean so much in value of the coin.

i dont think that 3,4,8,12,20 are too close togather since they all are based on the how many details are showing and MS ranges seem to take a life of thier own.

its a superficial thing im talking about but it would make a difference.

gonna see if i can find that ANA list since, being new to the hobby, im still trying to learn all i can.

The full name of the book is - Official A.N.A. Grading Standards for United States Coins The 5th edition, which is the most recent, was printed in 1996.

What I truely can not stand are the people who can not pronounce the name of the golden dollar coin correctly. :(

It seems like every other day while watching TV I’ll flip by a home shopping channel selling those overpriced coins. I pause to see what their selling and it never fails the next item is some MS “Sack Uh Gee We Uh”. Obviously most coins are easy. And I do realize that the Sac is a mouth full, but since I am from North Dakota I am sensitive about people miss pronouncing Sacagawea’s name . I also really get upset when people who claim to have knowledge of coins and their history can not pronounce the name correctly. Just hering the slaughtered version is enough to spin me up for an hour or so.

For those of you that don’t know the Sioux Indian Nation, specifically the Lakota and Dakota Sioux, pronounce the name as if it was spelled Sakakawea. In fact, the North Dakota legislature has commonly intentionally misspelled the name so that people who are unfamiliar with the pronunciation can learn to pronounce it correctly.

Anyone who has heard the Sioux language spoken would realize that they would never pronounce the name as “Sack Uh Gee We Uh”.

    Thump! Thump! :D
(That's the sound my fat butt makes when stepping off the soap box.)

It bugs me a bit that the Sacagawea dollar is called a gold dollar. It reminds me of an auction here in AZ where they hold up items and say " this item we are now bidding on is gold in color but not in metal". Usually these were chinsy cheap items that obviously were not gold. The line always got a chuckle.

Which is another good reason why they should used a fictional character/symbol like Liberty on the Obverse instead of Sac and her kid. But since our current coin designs are being forced down our throat by the politcally correct crowd, this is just the start of more ugly obverses at the expense of the tradition and beauty Teddy Roosevelt set forth a 100 years ago.

BTW...Liberty has not graced a circulated coin since 1945. Though she may be deemed "too political" for some (like the woman who can't get dates that sit on the CCAC), I think it is time to bring a new version of her that depicts everything that America is all about.

I too hate to buy a coin described as UNCIRCULATED and LUSTEROUS and rec'v a coin that looks like an oversized monoply game piece (you be the car --I'll be the big ugly coin)but more than that I hate people who buy coins that want to get an MS67 1893 S Morgan for 18.99- and when they don't get it- claim they were deceived.

I believe it is O.K. to buy and sell coins. I just don't like those parasites that do it for a living and have to suck the fun and adventure out of the hobby strickly for profit. I like just about everything else about coin collecting...except maybe Midas ;)
