I have been a member for slightly over 6 months now. I joined to gain a more rounded education in the hobby, my weaknesses being ancients and errors. This group seemed to fill the bill. In this short time, I have learned quite a bit concerning the many disciplines and sub-fields within Numismatics. Keeping it short, below are a few nuggets that I have noted (most a bit tongue-in-cheek). Its possible other members may also like to share collecting truths, particulars, or pointers they have picked up since joining. Things I have learned from CT: 1. What’s it Worth: Less than you think. 2. Coin Chat: An assemblage of the most eclectic men and women I have ever run across. 3. Coin Roll Hunting: That unsearched roll you bought on the internet isn’t. 4. Error Coins: 99% of those scratches, dents and dings on your coin are not errors. 5. Paper Money: US paper money isn’t made of actual paper (produced by Crane Currency and made of non-woven cloth, 75% cotton and 25% linen). 6. Bullion Investing: The basic formula for success =buy low, sell high. 7. Us Coins: That coin with Abraham Lincoln’s portrait is a cent, not a penny. 8. World Coins: There are 195 countries listed in the world, but only 164 National Currencies and 91 Mints. 9. Ancient Coins: Those extremely rare Widows’ Mites are still being produced. 10. And the best of all: The term is Doubled Die, not Double Die
Congrats on unraveling the secrets of the coin and currency universe! There's people on here for longer than you that haven't grasped even 1/10th of what you have. This means it's all clicking for you and your having the "aha! Moments" Well done!
Being a new member myself I must add a sub category to #4) Errors 4a) DEFDAM thanks paddyman . 4)Error Coins: 99% of those scratches, dents and dings on your coin are not errors.
Well done. If you browse through all the posts you'll see there's a few that haven't learned anything. lol
I think my favorite thing you have learned is #10, that is a big one lol. #1 is also important to realize. I have no doubt you will learn much more here as you continue to be a member of CT, and I am happy to see that!
You now hold the key to understanding the universe! Congratulations, it took me closer to fifty years! And they only gave me the trunk key.
A great list! Well done! Keep it up, and you will be ahead of me in a few years. I have been learning in this hobby for over 60 years.
