I was carrying some half-dollars when a female panhandler asked me for a buck to buy a soda. I gave her two of the halves and she said "thank you" and walked off. I saw her scoping out the coins and she came back and asked "Are these dollar coins?"

 

Agree - I carry a few well-circulated clad Kennedy halves to put in tip jars, etc. - whenever the young cashiers see the half dollar, they do a double take or shoot a quizzical look

We get off the 405 freeway in LA at the Santa Monica Avenue exit and there is usually someone panhandling at the exit. I put a bunch of Ike dollars I got at the bank in the console and the last time we were there I gave the guy one. He looked at it and said "Wow, haven't seen one of these in a long time."

I bought a bag of pretzels at a convenience store with odd change. I only had Sacs, Ikes, and Kennedy halves on me so that's what I paid with. I confused the teenage cashier so much with this that she handed me back my money and told me to just take the pretzels and go.
