There is a clarity emerging in this discussion, it is the Purist vs. The Error and Variety collectors, I am of the latter group. My cousin, who is a long time collector, sent me two volumes of the Cherry Pickers Guide and extra wheat he had so I could start a book for my new grandson and I got hooked on looking for old wheat cents.
I have a budget of $50, two bank boxes; I can't afford to buy slabbed rare coins and I find looking for them part of the fun. I posted many coins that were not what I thought, and have learned from them; I hope I am getting better at it. I believe the "There is a pony at the bottom of the manure" and that there are a few truly rare coins still in circulation. I believe there is room for both sides and the experts can really help the novices, I know they have helped me. Don't like YouTube? Don't watch You Tube.

I consider myself an EXTREMELY serious numismatist, and I’ve never so much as breathed on a copy of “Cherrypickers Guide”. Overton’s Book on bust half die pairings? Yup, have it. Read it cover to cover once, and now use it for reference. Cherrypickers Guide? Nope, don’t care.

And that's perfectly fine, just don't insult the newcomers because you don't agree with how they got started.

If you don't care about the cherrypickers guide, you must be Egyptian . You can't take you collection with you when you die .

Now look at all the money your family going to loose .
The cherrypickers coin guide, is for rare dies ....

Which means more bang for your buck ............

Here’s the essential problem with that, Jay. Having a Cherrypickers Guide mentality sends a subliminal message, and it’s not a flattering one. It says, “I’m here to turn a quick buck, likely at somebody else’s expense.”

I am here for the pure pursuit of knowledge and appreciation for the coiner’s art. Nothing more. Mercenaries bug the crap outta me.

No, my son will take it with HIM. We have discussed it. He loves my collection. It is his “freedom ticket” that allows him the luxury of concentrating on more esoteric numismatic pursuits, such as building an important Soviet era Russian collection.

The buyers drive the price not the Auctioneers dealers and coin shows, You can find many coins out of your budget, but that doesn't mean that they are overpriced. If you don't like the price then don't buy them. This is quite simple, it is called supply VS demand.

I glad you talked to him about it .
It's good to see you do " Acknowledge " the book .

Which also means you care about the book too ...

Here’s the thing - I don’t care about EITHER OF THOSE THINGS, rare dies OR “bang for my buck”. Can you wrap your head around that?

I can and I'm glad your son does too .
That's why you talked to him about your collection .

Which I'm sure you own some cherrypicker coins and don't even know it ...

Look, Fivaz and Stanton are friends and fellow “Numismatic Points of Light” and fellow exhibit judges with me. I just don’t give a crap about that subject matter, and I don’t quite get why a disproportionate share of new collectors ARE motivated that way.

No, my son DOESN’T. He too is NOT motivated by turning a buck, just the history in his hands.

Again, this isn't about you, it's about your collection after you die .

That's more of a reason to know as much as possible about your collection, for the family . Your son one day will, will, them to his children and there have to check everything out .

All because you and your son didn't care .
The last sentence is your words, not mine ..

The cherry pickers guide, can be what ever you want it to be, that is not what it means to me. Variety's are simply no different than your Overtons guide. Variety's are die pairings just the same. Yes, some construe the book with turning a quick profit. The same can be said about the Overton book, certain die pairs are more rare than others and have a premium attached.

I for one, and there are many others here including you! That use the books to further there knowledge and cherry pick a nice coin for their collection.
I have become a purist as I have grown as a collector. I want the highest grade coin, that is within my budget.
My collection is a way for me to leave something to my kids and hopefully further generations.
