First off, do not take this as me trying to shift blame or responsibility off of buyers for doing their research, but merely suggesting another way to assist that, here. Some sort of rating system within this site could help, or even a single place where threads can be put up for feedback on transactions/posts, specifically for that purpose (maybe appropriately within the for-sale sub-forum). You're allowing people to post things for sale, so allow people to help others by providing valuable information and feedback in an easy readable manner. I'm a member of several other boards, and one in particular uses something called "iTrader", which is a feedback/rating system integrated into their forum software (they use vBulletin, I haven't looked into what you use here). Anyone who sells anything through the forum or outside of it can be rated (much like ebay). Within every post - just like there's info on when they joined, how many posts, likes, etc - their feedback rating is shown as well so it's very easy to see whether a person might be reputable or not. No, it isn't the end-all/be-all trust maker, but it helps as it's one extra thing to advise on credibility direct from users of this board. As a new member I obviously haven't built any rapport with people yet, and I'm sure if I just started PM'ing people out of the blue about "who is this person, have you ever dealt with them, etc", I may start annoying them, quickly. Most folks seem to be pretty accommodating and helpful, but why bother them more than you have to. Just my opinion.
