Very cool!!! I've had a Confederate Note on my list and have been searching the web to find one that I really liked but just couldn't decide which one to get. The Lincoln connection is really cool all by itself but upon closer inspection I see that it's dated February 17th which is my oldest son's birthday.. Pow!!! that totally sealed the deal for me...This is definitely my next addition...
Collecting banknotes, at least ones in really good condition, tends to make you bankrupt! Very expensive in comparison to collecting coins. The 1864 and 1863 series can be completed within a reasonable stretch, but the others gets prohibitive very quickly. Good luck and happy hunting!
While on the topic of Confederate currency, the notes that are interest bearing, especially with notations of interest paid, were they meant for general circulation or were they essentially bonds not likely to leave a strong box until redemption time? Thanks
It was meant more for the "strong box", but things became really complicated as war dragged on. Not an easy topic to discuss as there are so many rabbit holes and hence exceptions to the rule.
Very nice notes! Glad to see more CSA collectors. I have been slowly adding to my collection, but it is getting more difficult. Recently, I picked up the following Chemicograph note. These designs were sanctioned by Memminger to fight off the rampant counterfeit notes coming from the North. A new set of plates was ordered from London that made it more difficult to counterfeit, but the plates never made it through the blockade. Hence, it was never put into production. After 75 years, a complete set of these was discovered and printings were made before they were sent to the Smithsonian. One one complete set of plates remains as the US Navy had a tendency to melt all metallic objects that was confiscated during the blockade. Here is the $20 note:
