How about these coins from the New Zealand "The Lord of the Rings Characters Collection" To be fair, both Gollum and the Orc are particularly ugly creatures to begin with. On the whole though, the entire collection isn't anything special to look at. I love them anyway, and have bought the 6 coin subset "Light versus Dark Collection" Other coins in the collection: https://secure.nzpost.co.nz/cgi-bin...y/lotr_currency_lotr_character_collection.htm
I've never been very fond of the Susan B. Anthony dollar as well. Is the SBA also jokingly referred to as the "Carter Quarter?" Now that some of you mention it...The Barber designs aren't very appealing to me as well.
Look at this hideous FEC and Kennedy Half from another forum. The FEC won for ugly coin, but my choice would have been the half. http://www.coinpeople.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3833
The Special Olympics coin, honoring Eunice Kennedy-Shriver is particularly oogly: Insight On the News had this to say in an article on US government waste: "One honoring Eunice Kennedy Shriver for her work with the Special Olympics would have been the worst-selling commemorative coin of all time if Phoenix Home Life, a patron of the Special Olympics, hadn't stepped in to buy 250,000 of them, averting embarrassment."
I voted for the half also! I guess you hadn't noticed this then... http://www.coinpeople.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3213
Dang!!! I actually bought the Shriver coin, back when I was less selective about what I bought from the mint. If Phoenix Home did not step up, I would at least had a low mintage coin! Ooops, I have a houseguest looking over my shoulder . . . hey!! what tha.... Good Evening Coin Talk Subscribers!!! This is Ahnold, governor of Coll-i-fourn-i-a!!! I do not like you weakling coin collectors making fun of my mother-in-law!!! Maria is crying every night because of you. If you do not stop I will have Senator Feinstein introduce a Governor Half Dollar program . . . and we will start with the most populous state and start with Me and work backwards!! Then you can look forward to Gray Davis, Pete Wilson, and Jerry Brown on your precious half dollars!!! And don't think I won't do it . . . I can be very persuasive and threaten to crush any Senator who votes against the coin program . . . so stop making fun of my mother-in-law or .... "I'll be back!!!!"
Actually, I saw the sixpence. It's ugly alright, but looks like a piece of charcoal and has no character. That Kennedy half -- it looks radioactive or disease ridden -- something that makes you want to run!!
Umm, ehhh, ohhh sorry Governor, your eminence sir. Really, it was just a typo when I said "oogly", I meant to type "pretty". (Say, got any steroids for sale?)
