Just curious Paul, you would pay 3.25x book for that little bit of toning around the edge on the mercury? I thought you liked coins with full toning, and this coin is 90% white. Just trying to read and learn.
... and I bet Dime would sell it to you for that today ; ) Nice coin,,, and I like these that have accent toning that enhance the white over most other toners.... especially since I've seen them go for no premium or little premium before... I'll guess Dime got for pcgs price guide .. $200
$300, for some reason every issue I start to collect with rainbow tones suddenly becomes popular, just started fooling around with mercs and I see some high prices lately. Nice coin!
First of all, I don't know what is keeping that coin out of an MS68 FB holder. Maybe the photo is hiding something. I don't pay a premium for toning, I pay for eye appeal, and this coin has it in abundance. The toning pattern on this coin gives the best of both worlds. The color provides a level of originality and beauty that simply can't be matched by a blast white coin, but at the same time, the surfaces are not hidden by the toning. The coin appears to have gleaming luster from the photo and the vibrancy of the colors is off the charts. Anytime my initial reaction to a coin is WOW, I will pay a premium to obtain it. If Dimefreak paid less than $650, he should just be thankful it was not sold in an auction setting with me as a rival bidder.
So the price you quoted was not really for toning, but really for a quality premium. I was suspecting that, since it is a nice coin. My concern would be that someone reading your response would think that the slight toning was driving a 3.25x premium, so that is why I wanted you to elaborate.
Wow, interesting responses. I am glad to see a toning enthusiast such as Lehigh echo's my thoughts exactly. The Dime actually was not even part of the intial deal. A member from PCGS had posted two simliar toned coins with knockout prices on them. He wanted $300 for this MS68 $300 was book price and I thought the coin was very attractive so I took it and the MS66 he had offered for $45. Well we got to talking and apparently he sent a mini hoar of 1941 dimes with similar toning to PCGS and after he sold me these two he would only have one left. Well me being me I asked if I could see and acquire the last one. He sent a picture and told me $500 Delivers all three. So essentially I paid $165 for the MS67FB. So having the MS68 MS67FB and MS66 all from the same hoard I must say I agree with Paul. not only doe the MS68 have more nicks but I feel it has less to offer overall than the MS67FB. The only conclusion I could come up with is what RLM said. They must have held it back because of the finger print which is not very obvious in hand. A knockout coin for the grade for sure! At at auction setting I cant say I would have went $650 from the photos but in person there is no question I would have!!!:thumb: Baha is up PS here is the MS66 for kicks and giggles. ( its the default coin on Coinfacts.)
You scored a nice hat trick but aren't those pictures of the same coin? Look at the striations in the reverse field under AMERICA and the water (or milk) spot at the bottom of the RI in addition to the spot southwest of UNUM. Oh I see, different obvs. but you posted the same rev. for both.
BTW, I thought you might have had a go at this one in Heritage's last auction: http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1152&Lot_No=7916&Lot_Id_No=15049 Pretty obverse!
I edited the reverse of the MS68...They all confuse the heck out of me....lol....I liked that Heritage coin but remember the FUN show when I got hosed on the coin I had been after for 3 months???? Well It popped up on PCGS and I got it!!! Pic will be posted as soon as it gets here ( Any day) and I get it to Shane!!! So pretty much by better half is watching by spending. Looks like Ill be a watcher for a little bit now.
Congrats! You must have been doing something right to get such good karma. Looking forward to the pics. Did you pay as much as you were prepared to in the auction?
The dealer is well respected and frequents this site. So as long as I actually receive the coin I can say I am very pleased. Ill just say he was very generous with the price of the coin. Even let me know after I paid that he accidentally charged me $25 too much and will be sending the $25 refund.
I like the coin and it has pleasing eye appeal but nothing I would consider monster. I think it drove a small premium: $950
I really like Morgans like this one: subtle and even. Unfortunately your photos are tending toward the red (warm) which is denying the blue-green at the bottom. I also think it drove a small premium and will undercut Lehigh a bit with $920. PS: I would've gone a little lower if it were a more recent purchase but I'm trying to cover the higher FMV that untoned Morgans had a year and a half or so ago. I admit this is incomplete reasoning because I don't know what the toning market was like then.
