Certainly time is one difference. So, in some cases, is the temperature. So, in some cases, is the % of sulphur in the surrounding atmosphere. So while the end state is the same (i.e. comprised of the same elements), the physics of how the thin film grows -- in more than just time -- is different. And it is for this reason, along with others of a more philosophical nature, why I do not believe that distinguishing between natural and artificial toning is as lost of a cause as some might infer from your posts. Happy Holidays....Mike
I was going to say the same thing. I'll guess $1800 instead. Tough coin to value -- the next grade up it's a $5k+ coin.
Mike - you're up early......trying to catch Santa, eh? I think my coin is interesting from a price and timing perspective. I paid $1500 on the bourse floor, but it sold at a 2005 Heritage auction for $1840. And, I'm not saying I got a deal....who really knows what the coin is worth? bahabully, once again, the floor is yours (and you're pretty darn good at this game)!
You misread my comment, I do not have any examples that I can show you. The point is this Mike, as long as the same chemicals/elements, moisture, temeperature etc, even though they may vary in quantity over a given period of time, are used in the AT process then the end result of those things reacting with the coinage metal is going to be the same as it is in the natural process. And if the end result is the same, then there is no way for anyone to ever tell one from the other because you cannot measure things like past temperture, past moisture or time. The only thing that can ever be measured, even by the most advanced scientific instruments or a human is the end result. Physics is physics Mike; physical reactions can be speeded up or slowed down by man. But if the same total quantities are used over an altered period of time then the end result will be the same. Yes, the philosophical aspect will always be different. But if you can't differentiate with certainty between AT and NT then the philosophical aspect becomes moot.
OK, I cheated and stole a pic from last nights teletrade auction from a coin I bid on but did not win. However, I suspect Marauderr might have also seen this beauty because it went for $650. Well done lad! As I've previously posted I do collect mostly toners but both my record keeping and photo skills are nonexistant so it's difficult for me to add my coins to the thread. In any event M10 is up.
$4,715 - no idea on the 'book' value of this one, nor any corresponding premium. very nice and 'most importantly', rare coin there. Toning is a nice adder to this one's rarity imo... I had to google to find a price, and just used the last auction finding for this coin (or it's sister) that I could find..... ie.-cheated. ; )
