BACK TO COINS :thumb:. Nice one Catbert! Looks like the general price around a year and a half ago was about $150 (not including CAC). I would go around 2.5 x bid, or around $375.
The posts that I deemed to be out of place have been removed. Lehigh, Dime - one more word out of either of you in the same vein and I'm going to give you both a vacation from the forum. Both of ya know better - that's enough ! To all others - I apologize that I had to post this here but it was needed !
This is an example of the toning that I was talking about earlier. While the coin has some areas of incredible color, much of the coin displays a deep charcoal patina that seems to be muting the luster of the coin. I don't see any significant marks that would drop the grade to the MS62 and I will assume that the luster is playing a part in the final grade. I give the color a 7 but the luster only a 3. Using my method, that results in a toning quality of 6 which is nice but not worthy of a huge premium. In addition, most collectors would seek out a higher grade for this common date barber either for a type set or a series set. I will guess $225.
Perhaps a few more guesses first and then I'll post what was paid. BTW, I didn't realize this, but I bought this in April of this year. Sorry. Here are some larger pics (hopefully, not too large for Chris) that may either confirm what Paul had to say regarding marks and luster or not.
I know exactly what you mean now; you were talking about basic, dark toning generally seen on silver but I just wasn't putting two and two together--I think because it's still hard for me to believe that Morgan photo of yours was concealing such a level of charcoal toning! (It still seems to have some reflectivity in the face that suggests luster.) Okay, I'll move on now.
I've heard it repeated quite often that if a coin is left to tone in the same environment that spurred the toning in the first place, it will eventually turn black. Is this correct, Paul? Chris
seasnake is almost dead on. I paid $285 (it was negotiated down to this price). I think it is accurately graded, but despite it's lower mint state, it has wonderful eye appeal. Thank you for indulging me in butting into the thread. And Lehigh, I understand your points. seasnake - you're next!
This is my 1st time uploading pictures so hope it works. I bought this coin raw from the big (coin fest?) show in CT last year. I have bought other raw coins from this particular dealer and had them slabbed, his grade opinion has been spot on every time, this came back from NGC as AU50, the obverse color is nicer in hand, the reverse is pretty close.
These pictures don't so this coin justice, the obverse has a blue ring over the stars and the center is light magenta. I have some better color pictures of my morgans but my casual record keeping leaves me without information on when I bought them and price paid, I remember this one because my wife paid for it as an early christmas present.
Nice coin. I don't know this series so this is an uneducated guess: Numismedia wholesale is currently $250 and you say the toning is more attractive in hand. With the wear on this, bought raw, I'll say $330.
I'm curious to know if you actually paid a " toning premium " when you bid or purchased this coin. I think that is an important factor we need to consider as we suggest the price tag you paid.
If, to begin with there was no premium paid , we are blowing in the wind with regards to giving an estimate on something that doesn't exist to begin with., and simply playing the Price is Right . I think the intention of the thread was specifically for coins in which a premium was paid. I made the same error when posting two of my coins, because I did not pay a premium. Anyway, it's up to the OP to set the rules.
