I was hoping Paul & Mike would make it back by now, and Krypto has been conspicuously absent - but none of them are even on so I guess we'll move on. coinamn is the closest with his guess of $167.50. I paid $120 for the coin.
My Toned 1928 - S Okay I won't hold things up. Here is a purchase I made a year ago. As you can see it is an NGC MS 65 FH SLQ. Please offer your opinions and guess the amount I paid for it. Remember this is a FH coin. Have at it.
Sorry about the photography. This coin is beautifully crimson toned both on the OBV & Rev. As you may or may not see, it is also a fully lustrous coin. Full appreciation can only be had with coin in hand.
Dark mottled toning almost never brings a premium. In fact, this toning will often times hold and otherwise exemplary coin back in price since people can't get past the toning. Only a hardcore toning fan can find the beauty in this type of patina which often yields a description of "wholly original". It is kinda like saying a girl has a nice personality. My guess is that you bought this coin 15% back of Numismedia Wholesale which is currently $750. Therefore my guess is $637.50.
Interesting comments. Back when I was deciding whether or not to bid, You offered a comment to me about this coin. At that time , you had nothing but praise of this coin and you had asked me to sell it to you after I had won the auction . Your offer at that time Paul , was considerably over what I finally purchased the coin for. What a difference a year makes. But to offer a possible reason for this change of mind you have paul, these are truly poor photo's and the original seller had far better photo's . In hand , it's is actually a pretty stunning coin.
I actually paid the Seller " Disruptek" $ 611.00 plus $51.20 for tax . So both you and Paul are right on. Toss a coin to see who's next! LOL Oh BTW I recently was offered $975.00 for the coin, and as I did prior, refused to sell . It will stay with my SLQ collection.
I think if you re-read my statement you will realize that I have not changed my mind about the coin. I said that "only a hardcore toning fan can find the beauty in this type of patina". I certainly fall into that category. However, what I would pay either now or a year ago is irrelevant. I can only assume that you bought this coin in an auction setting. Therefore, my guess is predicated upon what the thought process of the underbidders was. IMO, most bidders on this coin would bid 15% back of Numismedia Wholesale, thus my guess. FWIW, I still think it is a very nice coin that is being hurt by terrible photography. A good photo of this coin could add 20%+ to the price of the coin.
Forget tax! Forget shipping & insurance! Just the coin! Geez, I hope no one who lives in Canada wins. Don't they have some sort of duty or tax on coins coming from the US? Chris
Now that was tricky! Would you mind posting Disruptek's photos because the ones you posted are not his. He has outstanding photos and uses some of the very best in the business to image his coins. I know this because he divulged it recently on the PCGS forum. However, he did not state which photographers he uses by name. My guess is that they are Mark Goodman photos. If you were offered $975 for this coin, I am willing to bet that it was based on Disruptek's photos, not the photos you posted in this thread. Come on man, lets see the real photos.
No argument there, and yes after re-reading your first post, I misread what you were saying. okay who's next ?
I wish I had them Paul. For now, this true beauty is in my Coin safe. I think this is one that I want to have one of our better photographers handle for me. I'm Waiting on two coming back from CAC and may include them as well. I just might ask Mark to do these for me, I go gah gah over his photo's.
Alright, lets keep this moving forward with my most recent acquisition. A 1949-D Jefferson Nickel NGC MS67* with rainbow toning. Numismedia Wholesale is $58. Again, I think this exercise will be much more productive if you provide your reasons behind your guess. If you don't have reasons and are shooting from the hip, let us know that as well. Fire away fellas!

Come on man, lets see the real photos.[/QUOTE] His photo's were terrific. Actually the offer came from a neighbor. You eagerness for better pic's is encouraging me to get it done. Once I get the two others back, I'm going to contact Mark and make the arrangements.
I am mostly shooting in the dark, but I like the color, but I don't like the strike nor the grade. I will try $275.
I'm guessing $241.00. There are a lot of Jefferson collectors out there that would probably pay extra for that * designation. Extra points for their NGC registry.
I am going to take a stab at a value paid. I would suggest $600.00 It's not like NGC gives these star designations without being the best of the best in the eye appeal department. For me, what makes this coin unique is the " Ring " affect toning surrounding Jefferson and sweet home Monticello is fabulous. Those steps don't look to shabby either. I'm going to venture a premium value overall for this coin is $700.00
