Lehigh, so are you saying that a toning premium is appropriate on bullion coins? I am not being smart, I am very curious now. Does that mean only ASE or other dated bullion like a Maria Therese restrike, or maybe a Panda, or does it apply to other types of bullion products like rounds or bars?

I seriously not trying to hijack this thread, I just think Doug's posting brought up a valid question, (which is why I know Doug posted it).

It is more rare, but yes, I have seen toned bullion coins (specifically ASE's) sell at a premium. I don't collect bullion products like rounds or bars and don't know what effect toning has on their price.

    For Example:

    1995 Toned ASE PCGS MS67

If you bought in 2004 or 2005 I would go with a purchase price of $30 bucks and I would value it at roughly the same today.

I run across these toned proof frankies fairly often as they come right out of the original packaging with that sort of toning. I think your blue one is especially attractive and if it were in a normal grade of say PF65 or PF66 I suspect I could easily sell it for around $70 bucks. As a PF62 though it's value drops dramatically as most folks have a grade cutoff of PF/MS65 on moderns so I would say the coin is worth around $15 to $20 bucks even with the nice toning.

All I know is that we are getting way off track from the original intent of this thread. Paul, I thought it would be a good idea, but I figured it wouldn't fly as you had envisioned.

I personally sold two in the last month and I don't usually get a lot of modern consignments plus I can think of at least two or 3 more I sold this year that were nice and again....I don't try to find these coins they fine me :) I don't want to post them here and derail but I do have images of all of the ones I have sold ;)

Now Mike, would I mess with you ?

Joking aside, no I am not messing with you. Just posting a coin and going along with the intent of this thread.

That said - bigjpst is our winner. He had the first guess of $10. That coin cost a whopping $8.

Yes it's a bullion coin. But don't you find it interesting that another bullion coin, the toned ASE Paul linked to, is probably going to sell for about 10x book (and that value is 90% toning premium) while this one sold for 1.5x book ? Yeah, part of that is because this coin is not a US coin and the ASE is. But still it teaches us something about the toned coin market does it not ?

I am glad that lehigh started this thread, It really starting to help me understand the toning market. I am still not seeing any real consistency in the premiums of the different coins. I'm guessing that within each series a different set of rules applies. I hope that this thread goes on long enough to help straighten some of these questions out for me anyway.
Thanks GD for throwing in a curve with the bullion coin. So here goes my pic.
