I'll end the suspense. I bought this coin in late 2015 for $528. It had sold two other times in 2013 and 2015 for $380 and $470, respectively. Of note, when I posted the coin on the PCGS boards shortly after purchase, John Agre (of Coin Rarities) messaged me and said he loved the coin, had meant to bid on it, and if I wish to sell in the future he would be interested. While some may think toned world coins are not premium-worthy like USA coins, they would be a bit mistaken for material like this. The UK and Canadian markets in particular, are quite robust. @ddddd I believe you were closest with a guess of $275. So, you're next.
I'm actually not too surprised. My guess was low because I thought you may have scored a super deal. However, I myself have been outbid at auctions for monster world coins. There is a strong market for them, even if it is not clearly reflected on this thread. Anyways, it is a great coin and the experts in the market seem to agree.
@baseball21 you can post next for being closest for Cascade's Morgan. If you don't want to, then I'll post.
Mine was as well for that reasons. The world market is undervalued in a lot of areas in my opinion, but believe their toners to be every bit worth of the same premiums
@baseball21 please add an approximate guide value. At heritage I see that greysheet is $370 while PCGS guide is $550. Give us an approximate average price for one of these if possible.
I will just use the $370 as the base. The colors don't appear vibrant, but that is not what I would expect with these coins. It does look like an original piece (and CAC agrees) with no distracting marks. Certainly a nice example for a type collector or someone looking to build a set. It is a premium coin and I will guess that it cost $575.
I have a feeling the toning looks really nice in hand. I'll say $850. On a sidenote, I just watched a toned 1949-D Franklin in a basement slab MS66 FBL (mt grade was MS64) sell for $240 + 18%BP.
I think it's actually overgraded based on the obverse detail (looks VF35 to me); strangely the reverse looks XF45. Maybe just a "weak" head strike up? It looks to be the 1840/0 Variety, so maybe that calls for a premium? I don't know, I've never been into varieties. I'm going to guess $460.
Silver dollar wins that round. Went for $715 withe the buyers fee, $650 without. Bit of a weak price but thought I'd mix it up with something that wasn't sky high. Full disclosure I have seen that one in hand which was another reason I chose it. The toning itself makes the obverse strike look a little worse than it really is, and the TrueView from my memory was closer to the in hand color. It's been a couple years since I have seen it and not sure who has it now but was a stunning seated quarter with great color
Hope that is yours @baseball21. Beautiful coin! by the way I hereby reserve my right to watch from the outside. I have a lot to learn. Thanks for the thread @ddddd .
