$818.76 first time in Jan with 51 bids as a 66+. I believe this was a top pop at the moment of auction for NGC with several fighting over it. @ddddd was closest. $545.62 second time in Oct with only 9 bids as a 66 CAC. I surely thought this would bring more money to the table but was not a top pop at PCGS and had many less people bidding it up. @GenX Enthusiast and @bsowa1029 were tied closest on this one but @GenX Enthusiast was closer on the first coin so we can use that as a tie breaker between the two of them. I was surprised this one didn’t really garner much of a premium being toned and went for such a loss after changing to PCGS and getting a CAC. I figured the + and CAC would have canceled out. I think most saw the toning as a negative eye appeal as it went for lower than price guide in both auctions.

I'm surprised by the results as well. I was certain that someone would have overpaid for the PCGS with CAC combo even with the lower grade. I was also thinking that someone would bid it up just because it's a Standing Liberty Quarter with color (regardless what the color actually looks like-just like @Paul M. mentioned with Peace Dollars). This gives me some hope that people are looking more at the coin than the marketing angle and common misconceptions. I also wonder if enough people remembered this coin as a 66+ (since both sales were in the same year) and didn't bid once they saw it in a lower grade? For instance, those that look for top pops wouldn't be as interested when the coin showed up in a lower grade.
Wow, I can't believe I actually won-ish one of these I did not expect the price to go down that much. Bad day at the races. OK, here we go. 1880-S MS64 PL PCGS CAC. 140$ PCGS price guide. No previous sales of this serial number. No cheating as you'll get full slab and I've already seen the auction price posted online.
I’ll bet the slab drove the premium more than the toning in this one. Those two combined with a PL and CAC, I know this one has to be moon money. $3,500
I won’t go that high but $1200 certainly seems reasonable for a PL Morgan with dramatic rainbow toning in a PCGS doily holder CAC. This coin has premiums being pushed from every angle.
I think it went for quite a bit, but also not as crazy as some think. The doily certainly pushes up the price in this case. I'll guess $585 That is close to the price that I watched another toned doily sell for. That coin was not PL, but it had a Gold CAC.
Lots of premiums I’ll say $415 I think more for the holder. A green cac is nice and the toning decent but not exciting.
$625. Definitely significant premium on this coin for several reasons, but not MAJOR premium. The color is very nice, but it’s one sided and not monster nice. The date is also common with lots of eye appeal. If it were a much tougher date for that kind of eye appeal then I could see it being a 4 figure coin. The
Some good reasoning and guesses above. One person is only 7$ off I'll leave it for today and reveal late tonight.
All righty - I'm relieved at some of the moon money bids Before bidding, I researched auction prices for this grade with cac and prooflike and only found one other toned example, selling for 2100$. It had immaculate, dramatic reverse toning and a quite boring obverse. This one has very splotchy toning on the reverse, but i loved the cameo obverse and gold toning and it was my reason for deciding to spend more than the usual. In Heritage live it jumped from 140$ to my final bid of 340$, but with heritage fees was 408, or 410$. I believe if you research the pcgs cert #, it says 408$.
@Mainebill takes the round (by the slimmest of margins ) and is up next.... @GenX Enthusiast I think you paid a fair price and could likely make some money on that coin. While the color by itself isn't unique, the combination of pl, color, and doily make it pretty awesome!
