I think this one will make for a great discussion and guesses. We also have not seen many of these coins in this thread. To make it more interesting feel free to guess the price it sold in each slab. Jan 2019 NGC 66+ Oct 2019 PCGS 66 CAC NGC Price Guide 66 $725 66+ $1,400 67 $1,900 PCGS Price Guide 66 $675 66+ $850 67 $1,750
$905 first time $1,055 next time I don’t find the color particularly attractive but someone else might have. I’m also guessing it went for at least a bit more even when it lost the plus (since it gained a sticker and went into the more “favored” PCGS holder).
$1K $900 I think the coin performed better in the NGC MS66+ plastic and that the plus grade played more of a factor in the premium than the toning, but there is still a small premium for the toning. As someone who used to collect toned SLQs, that toning is significant and attractive for the series.
Ah, yes, the "Standing in a River of Pee" example. I've been waiting for this one to fill out my Effluvia set! I actually like the toning a bit. I'm betting it didn't perform that well in the NGC holder and with the gold shield, CAC and only a half step lower in the pcgs holder, filled out its price potential at 66, 66+. Let's say 705$ and 875$.
Interesting that there is such a huge discrepancy in the price guides, especially at 66+. Oh, and @Lehigh96 is absolutely right about the toning. Just spend any amount of time looking at toned SLQs, and you will see what he means. My guesses: $975 the first time, $1100 the second time.
I know SLQs aren't easy to find toned, but I'm just not seeing what you or @Lehigh96 see. I'd be almost certain that it would be a hard sell and the majority of people looking at it would be closer to the @GenX Enthusiast description than to thinking it was attractive. Edit: This page has several that I would consider attractive https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/978796/nicely-toned-standing-liberty-quarters/p1
Some good comments so far. Let’s see if we can get a few more guesses before I call it. I personally don’t like the toning either but it’s not terminal and these often drive a premium with SLQs. This one just had to be shared because I felt it has so much going on that it would make for good conversation.
There are some more obviously lovely examples on that page, ddddd. It does seem that, in this series with apparently few toned examples, this yellow coloration is somewhat rarer than the darker toning and might bring a uniqueness premium. It is lucky that in this case that we don't have a reclining liberty... And again, I rather like it, and probably insulted it as a little boy on a playground would a little girl he fancied, during the awkward bubblings of puberty. I do think my previous guesses are rather conservative, but I have to plead ignorance of the series, so I'll leave them unchanged and wait to see.
$1050 NGC $875 PCGS Not my cup of tea. Looks more like staining than toning. I’d personally consider that negative eye appeal.
@ddddd I agree, there are at least 10 examples of better looking toning on that page you listed. There are even a couple better examples in this very thread. That’s why my guesses weren’t “moon money” guesses. But, it’s really a lot like the situation with Peace dollars: any amount of toning is going to bring a premium most of the time, unless it’s just completely terminal. Look at what a nice Peace dollar with just a little golden brown on the edges sells for.
