@Mainebill (and @Lehigh96 ) do you think the rattler (with a green sticker...note that the slab does not show the sticker, but the auction description and CAC website confirms it has a green sticker) alone would make it go $3k+ more? I actually think the green sticker in this case would hurt the final price as enough people will think it's maxed out (even if a green stickered coin can upgrade). I'd also speculate that the price had more to do with the color (monster), venue (Legend) and being from David Hall's collection. The rattler helped, but I would guess by no more than $1k.
My original guess was approximately 17.5X price guide. If you apply that to a rattler which will be assumed to have at least a one grade upgrade, based on the $225 price guide for an MS66, my guess would have been closer to $4K. If I had known it sold at a Legend auction, that would have increased my guess even higher, and had I known it was Homerun Hall’s, even higher still. That said, I would still never be anywhere near $10K for this coin. I’m not sure I would even reach your guess of $7500. The price this coin achieved was the result of a perfect storm of marketing factors leaving only one question unanswered; did it come with a free ceremonial shovel?
All fair points. It might be a burial, but I could actually see it going for the same $14k or even higher today based on some of the latest results.
