While this one has more attractive toning than the last, to me, it looks like a dipped specimen that was subsequently target toned in an album of some kind. Since I was high on the last coin, and I think this one is better, I will stick with my same guess. $650
@Mainebill is on a roll! I agree it has the look of cleaned and retoned. PCGS must have market graded it back in the day (OGH era). I still liked the look and it's some of the more unique color I've seen on one of the Panama Pacific Commemoratives.
I know this is just for fun and we shouldn’t take it too seriously but why are you expecting 20x price guide for this coin? The coin has nice obverse toning, pull away toning at the stars, and a touch of textile toning on the face. However, it also has a multitude of toning breaks and the color scheme is essentially limited to one progression with the yellow & magenta as the dominant colors. Coins that bring huge premiums usually have either multi banded rainbow progressions or get into the later color progressions with green playing a significant role. And you almost never see major toning breaks. I’m not saying the coin isn’t nice, it is, but the toning on this coin does nothing to separate itself from the thousands of other toned Morgan Dollars on the market that generate 4-5x price guide. Lastly, I could be wrong, but that photo looks like a Heritage “beauty shot” and my guess is that the slab shot is going to be much less impressive.
I've seen this coin before, or one very much like it, with the gauze effect. 1232$ Morgan toners, even MS63, are blowed up these days at auction.
I’m not Johndoe, but I’m guessing his number was based on some of the recent almost unbelievable auction results (mostly the ones I’ve been posting from GC). I agree with you that nothing about this coin suggests it should sell for more than 4-5x guide. However, I continue to be surprised by what I’m seeing lately. The premiums on some Morgans have become virtually unexplainable. Now $1,800 would still shock me for this coin (as that would be even beyond some of the extremes I’ve witnessed).
I was even gonna mention, this is not one of @ddddd s crazy outlier posts. I would be very surprised if this coin eclipsed $400, I think $300-$350 is the money range for this coin, hence by initial guess of $325.
I agree with your range and personally wouldn't be interested in the coin at anything over that price point. I also think @Mainebill might have given us a clue that the price was reasonable by saying he would have bid had he not missed it.
