Dear god. I think this one would benefit from a dip other than the black terminal spots on the reverse. I don’t like it at all and would think it would sell for a discount not a premium

 

I was just about to post a similar comment. I understand paying crazy money for gorgeous rainbow toning, and am willing to pay a premium for original surfaces even if they aren’t quite as pretty as a blast white coin. But this one crosses the line into butt ugly territory, as in falling off the ugly tree and hitting every branch on the way down. I do see some exceptional luster shining through the ugliness which is its only redeeming quality.

 

I was definitely surprised when I saw the final price. Either someone saw it in hand (and it looked much better than the photo) or someone thought too highly of the star (which is the theory I'm leaning towards).

 

I wonder if it’s been to CAC? Something tells me that it failed...

Maybe it did; that wouldn't surprise me. I also wouldn't be surprised to see it with a sticker as CAC seems to like crusty Commems (I've seen quite a few where the eye appeal is neutral at best).
Regardless, the coin exceeded all expectations even without a sticker.

Here’s a recent type set upgrade that I couldn’t resist. 15D is a common date, PCGS guide for the grade is $425. CAC approved examples on Heritage are starting in the 400 range (please don’t look if you are guessing...). I was not disappointed when I got the coin in hand.
