Mercury is a male Roman god who was associated with trade and finance by the ancient Romans. He was often depicted in Greek and Roman art wearing sandals (sometimes a helmet) with wings on them.

The goddess on the Mercury Dime is actually Liberty (not Mercury) who is a female goddess modeled after the ancient Roman goddess "Libertas".

The American public mistook the winged portrait of Liberty for Mercury and the name just stuck :)

I purchased a bag of uncleaned Roman coins and am currently in the process of cleaning them. Some of them are close to identification quality now :) Ancient coins with large histories are very exciting.

Yes, me too. I like them very much. I think when the heads are like this on an ancient coin they are called "conjoined."

Alegandron "ΤΩΙ ΚΡΑΤΙΣΤΩΙ..." ΜΕΓΑΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΣ, June 323 BCE

The two faces looking forward and backwards is called Janiform from Janus. See the Wiki article...

I believe it was originally a Diety from the Etrurians.
