I must be a collector/investor. I just keep buying and rarely sell anything. I like to have them to look at, sort through for albums, study them for errors/varieties and occasionally sell some for money. (Sometimes a profit is made). I also like to learn about coin that others like. I never knew very much about currency or ancients until I joined CoinTalk. I'm happy I found this place. With all the great people giving advice and just having fun, makes this forum another rewarding aspect of coin collecting.:thumb: Bruce
I'm about 2/3 investor and 1/3 collector. So I'm an investor/collector, but not quite a collector/investor. For me, collecting is a treasure hunt. I don't try to collect a complete set of anything or the most expensive high grade coin I can afford, but I enjoy collecting a lot. The ideal purchase is a coin with a combination of numismatic or potential numismatic value, and a low price in relation to the melt value. This isn't as hard as it looks. Most circulated morgan and peace dollars [except for key dates], low MS $20 gold coins [at times], and some high grade gold and silver commemoratives from the 1980s fit nicely into this type of collection.
How about sucker?!?!? Thats me sometimes.. I find a coin that I really like and end up paying too much for it...
Collector/Investor I have a primo set of Lincolns as my hobby, and a " put away " hoard of coins bought as investments that will buy us our houseboat when retirement time comes.
yah but when that day comes they'll be worthless, you'll flood the market with Red 22 D's and 09 S VDB's. they'll be a dime a dozen
I'm a collector. Everything I buy I have no intentions of selling. I believe I am well organized, have things well taken care of and I have several incomplete sets going. But whenever something is purchased, the term 'investment' has been known to be used from time to time when discussing things with the wife.
Pure collector. The only time I ever sell coins is because my collecting interests have changed and I want to free up the money for other coin endeavors. Whenever I purchase a coin, I never consider whether or not I can make money. I assume that I will lose 15-20% on every coin and chalk it up to money spent on the entertainment value of the hobby.
I’m defiantly an accumulator/collector. I know the value of my coins but i have a lot of common stuff. I have a bunch of uncompleted sets too. :rolling:
Geeze, I don't know what I'd consider myself. I do buy coins without any thought of having or wanting to resell them someday for profit, but there have been a lot of coins I've bought that I've resold either to upgrade, or just because I realized it wasn't a smart buy on my end. Usually when I do sell, I'm not too concerned with profit. 100% of the time now I've sold on eBay and as soon as I got paid I took the money I got and purchased something new or better. So I'm going to classify myself as a "collector who sometimes sells, but not for a profit"
As some of you said here, I am a collector. I can't see the profit on most of those coin adquisitions. I suppose there could be better places where I could invest money on. I buy a coin because I like it, so it makes no sense for me to sell it to get a benefit of some cents. You can only get profit if you put a lot of effort, time and money on it. But there many things where profit should be bigger for that amount of effort, time and money. And of course, I try to put a little order on it, but not as much as it deserves. I wish I had more time for it.
A little south of an Accumulator/Collector. :kewl: While I buy coins like a collector, will keep anything found, have jars of things and have almost no records of 25 years in the hobby. Estimated 3000 coins not including the bags, boxes and jars of raw coins. I build sets with a “I need list” rather than a "I have list".
