I’d suspect there would be a bit more leniency if it was a late 50s/early 60s nickel.

    That’s a good point.

It looks more like some sort of residue than toning. It may be MA to the larger market but not to me.

Agree, I was thinking it looks like something on the coin rather than tone. But I don't like it. "AT" not MA.

I also think the toning looks almost like a residue. Could it also be toning from a pouch (or leather that it was stored in at some point)?

I'm neutral on the coin overall and will go with MA.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

This has the canary yellow that a well known Ebay coin doctor admitted to creating, and he was able to get a pretty good number of his coins in slabs before the jig was up. It was a huge scandal a few years ago.

    I'm going to vote AT.

It seems odd to have the toned obv with an untoned ring around it,almost like a pad with some chemical was placed on it,and that even yellow tone that doesn't merge into other colors to any significant degree. I think AT, as well.

I'm fascinated that the only person that said NT is a metallurgist. How did this tone like this? Why did it tone like this? Is it just me or does it seem like it is sitting on the surface rather than being a chemical reaction at the surface level? How do you explain the bizarre pattern?

What do you think about the leather pouch theory for this one?
Are you familiar with the NGC "314" Peace Dollars? Could this be similar to those?

I think many of those are AT personally. I don't think all of those are from the same submission though, but there certainly are submissions closely linked that I have long found suspect. I have also yet to see any proof of a "leather pouch" hoard. My understanding is that it was hearsay and innuendo spread at a coin show.

The bizarre pattern is precisely why I think it is NT. Are we to believe that the supposed coin doctor was so sloppy as to tone a coin that had a clear impediment to toning at the periphery?

To my eye, the coin experienced some very unusual storage condition but I see nothing about the color or depth of color that would lead me to say AT.

Perhaps the coin had something holding it around the periphery and was then placed in an envelope. Regardless, I don’t see anything that rises to the level of AT. The toning isn’t deep enough to hide any flaws and isn’t dramatic enough to drive a price premium. So here is my question for all you AT guys, why would a coin doctor accept this as his finished product? Why not dip it and start over?
