View attachment 1273557 Very nice @singig - thank you for posting the pic and information. This coin was originally minted by Titus with the portrait of Claudius facing right and cataloged by Mattingly in BMCRE (British Museum Coins Of The Roman Empire, volume II, Claudius No. 287 (Plate 56.1). (My coin) It was later issued by Titus with the portrait of Claudius facing left and cataloged by Mattingly in BMCRE (British Museum Coins Of The Roman Empire, volume II, Claudius No. 288 (Plate 56.3). (Your coin).
Thanks for the information !! , I found the url for the specimen you indicated. The coin cannot have 30 mm diameter, at least 35 mm, is from the same obverse die as mine and is struck on a large flan. https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/2/522 I saw that they added a correction note at the end : Corr: Given to 'Flavian mint in Thrace' in RPC II, but attributed to Rome in RIC II (2nd ed.).Corrected coin-type (post publication)
Thanks @jamesicus ! , I took out form the book the information you indicated: https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.69978/page/n399/mode/2up?q=clavdivs
I would agree with RPC's original attribution of the Claudius sestertii from this obv. die: probably provincial mint in Thrace, not Rome. It is a shame that the new edition of RIC II made little effort to solve this rather difficult problem and instead merely attributed most of the apparently Thracian bronzes to Rome not Thrace.
There are so many REST types (Titus or Domitian) in the same situation, declared Trace mint by RPC and changed to Rome mint by RIC. Very confusing , some examples: https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/2/512 https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/2/513 https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/2/514 https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/2/536
