Since @chrsmat71 shared my old Liz I Shilling, I figured I would share the coin that replaced it. I wasn't looking to replace my old Liz I Shilling but skimming the bay as I tend to do, this new one was going fairly cheap and after the usual last second bidding going high, I ended up winning it just below my max. I may miss the old coins toning & some stronger legends showing, but this had much more meat to the portrait, which is the reason I got it. Also is much later in the reign and seems to be a biz scarcer mint mark than my old one. Elizabeth I (1558 - 1603 A.D.) AR Shilling O: (key) ELIZAB’· D’· G’· ANG’· FR’· ET : HIB’· REGI, crowned and mantled bust left (bust 6B). R: (key) POSVI DEV’· AD IVTORE M · MEV’·, coat-of-arms over long cross fourchée. Sixth coinage. Tower (London) mint; im: key. Struck 1595-1598 AD 31mm 5.81g North 2014; SCBC 2577
Nice bust! Those types were struck in such low relief that, as you know, the busts faded out very quickly.
Here's mine again! I was curious why the bust was so weak on many of these when the legends and reverse seems relatively strong. My first though was it may bad been a think to rub Elizabeth's portrait for luck or something like that.
Nice replacement coin @Mat and great coins all! Here is my Lizzy I... England, Tudor Dynasty Elizabeth I (1558-1603) AR Sixpence, London mint, Struck 1575 Dia.: 16 mm Wt.: 2.92 Obv.: ELIZABETH D G ANF FR ET HI REGINA: Crowned bust left Rev.: POSVI DEV ADIVTOREM MEV: long cross over arms with date above Ref.: Seaby 2563
I have shown my sixpences several times here so I'll undercut with a threepence of 1578 that suffers from doublestriking. I always wanted a shilling but one never found me.
