it took me years to appreciate the art form of the coin. At first I collected because they were interesting to me and I wasn't particulary interested in the design, now I find myself searching out some of the early commems because they have an inherent beauty about them much like a small painting done entirely in precious metal
Steve: DeOrc is talking about the look of a coin that simply grabs you when you walk by and see it in a dealer's case. Much the same happened to me years ago when I saw a dealer with some Hard Times Tokens. I had never collected them before and was attracted to the different style and political messages. To make a long story short, I went from owning perhaps one to over 50 over the course of a couple of months. It has been some time since I have been able to acquire more, but I still look, and ocassionally take them out to study and admire. In much the same way I started collecting Bust half dollars, by being grabbed by an 1807 half that I just 'had to have'. If it hits you, you'll know it.
