Do you have The Official ANA Grading Standards for US Coins? There aren't that many essential and general books, but there are tons of essential works related to a specific series or topic.
Well it needs to be something you like to collect. There are a lot of books on specialties. So what do you like to collect? I am sure others can make some specific recommendation.
I don't know whether you want a reference book for a specific coin series or something about numismatics in general. If you want a book about the development of US minting operations from the 1830's to the 1930's, then Roger Burdette's (aka RWB on these forums) book, From Mine to Mint is a must-have. It is packed with so much information that you'll want to read it again and again. http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/from-mine-to-mint.html Chris
Yes, the ANA book, or Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of US and Colonial Coins. ...Oh, I almost forgot "Making the Grade" (3rd edition, Top 80 most popular US coins).
PCGS Guide to Grading and Counterfeit Detection is invaluable. Here's some more I have recommended: http://www.coinshowradio.com/mikes-book-recommendations
