Wow, what a story! I had a Constantine coin fall off the table as I was examining my collection. It rolled all the way across the room and fell into a heating duct. It's still in there, somewhere, but I haven't figured out how to get it out!
Hi ancientone! I only own two immaculate coins. One is gold and one is silver. They have both been encased since they were minted, so my fingertips have never touched those. I thought that the oils on my hands might affect the patina on the cents I examine and for that reason I should wear gloves as I inspect them. What if I happen across a truly special coin and then my fingerprints and oils get on them?!?! Egads! Apart from that, there is another reason to wear gloves. This collector/student is obsessive about washing her hands well (like scrubbing for surgery) after inspecting coins with bare hands. Ewwwww! The dirt that comes off! Yesterday I wore white gloves while hunting through five rolls of cents (nuttin' btw). Those grimy gloves were immediately laundered and bleached. I should have taken a picture of them. Yiiichk! Next time.
i don't think you can hurt a patinated ancient with clean dry hands. haven't i heard somewhere along the line of people about sebum (oil) from the body actually being applied to coin intentionally by people?
I don't have any ancient coins. I only have one that looks ancient; but, I am sure it could not be (perhaps I should post it after all). But now I am rather feeling a desire for one ancient coin of my very own - ta' have!
No time like the present. With all the activity about protecting "cultural heritage" of the places ancient coins come from, it's just possible they may become somewhat more difficult to collect over here on the left side of the Atlantic Ocean.
Most examples can be found for budget friendly prices. It really depends on the period of history you are most interested. Collecting Ancients is addictive and interesting (and fun). Go ahead. Dive in. You won't drown.
Talk about the benefits of wearing gloves when handling dirty coins -- I never forgot to put my gloves on before touching this one!! Finally, it is in a protective flip!
I found an Allectus a number of years ago and apparently I wasn't the only one partial to one of these. My hound snuck it from the coffee table and devoured it !! Not any old Allectus either, it had a standard Galley reverse but on the galley was a beautiful Victory advancing left !! I did the necessary for a couple of weeks but it didn't resurface.......
