[QUOTE="Sean5150, post: 2365455, member: 75607"]I thought the majority of the MSD never went into circulation. Basically, the other mints got released in the 60s and then most of the last coins in the vaults were the CCs, which started getting released in 1972. The big difference, like you said, is those coins were holdered immediately, whereas bags of the other coins were sold to the public, which could lead to more tampering.

There were also only 13 years of CC coins which did have the lowest mintages. And unlike the other mints, that sat in vaults, most of the CC coins that weren't in vaults were actually used as currency. That's where you see the real price gulf, in the circulated CCs. But as far as common dates go, there are far fewer CC common dates as a whole. So while the pop of say an 1883CC MS65 DM might be higher than an 1879S MS65 DM (this is just PCGS pop) and the price of an 1879S MS65 DM is lower than the CC, there are simply more years of common dates to choose from in the other mints.

That being said, the CC story bumps the price up. It was a mint that was never supposed to be built, that had a spotted history and only made coins for 13 years. It was smack dab in the middle of the wild west, in a town named for Kit Carson. Cowboys in Saloons used them as poker chips. So while I do agree the DMPL Carsons get a price bump (a very slight one), it would be commensurate with their pedigree and makes them no less of a value than other DMPL coins. Maybe they are out of vogue for many collectors because of their popularity, but I being a newer collector, simply love them for the history and the paucity of die pairs which makes attributing VAMs far more manageable.

Every mint has a story, the New Orleans one is a great one.
