Yeah I really need to learn to take pictures, I can never get it without glares straight on so always have to angle a bit. I was hoping it wouldn't matter as much for a coin like this where the details are most important. And yes it's a great tool but having a tough time figuring the difference between VF20-30 since they all look similar to me. Like the details on my coin in the eagles wings and her hair all look similar to all 3 of the VF20, 25 and 30 to me. What is the 1903-O story you mentioned in your post above? That 66+ looks beautiful but the price tag definitely reflects it! Am I on the right track comparing specifically the hair and eagle wings for detail or do you look at other parts of the coin as well to compare?
I did't even bid on it, but did on the lower-priced MS-65+. I think the "*" and "+" designations from the TPGs are ridiculous. Just get the grade right for the number. In this case, CAC is agreeing that the coin is solid -- not sure if it's solid for MS-66 or mS-66+ -- and you wonder if that means it would grade MS-67 without a CAC sticker. BTW, maybe the vets can answer this generically or for MSD's in particular: will a CAC coin for a given grade ever exceed the price for the next higher grade without CAC ? My experience has been NO.
The 1903-O was super-rare among collectors in Mint State for decades until 1962 when the Treasury found thousands of them in vaults and the price collapsed from $1,500 to $20 in a manner of weeks. Was part of the Silver Rush of people exchanging currency for MSDs hoping to get valuable collector coins.
I collect Morgan's. I try to pay 20.00 or less. Are they worth collecting? I like the art work. My concern is, if paper money becomes just that, paper, is it wise to collect gold and Silver coins? Of course, I purchase circulated for that reasoning.
Just got this 84-CC in GSA holder today. Does this look like a 64 all day or is there a chance it could go up 1 or maybe 64+ (I can't imagine it to be 63 comparing it my my other CC 64's it seems to be a little nicer but I could be wrong)? Tried to use a loupe to get the problem areas, really it's mostly just on her cheek/chin area and on the reverse can't tell if mark is on coin or on case the rest is very nice. Not sure I want to send it in if zero chance at 65. I think the number of bag marks gives it a shot but wonder if the bad location hurts it a lot.
