I occasionally attend this monthly coin show. It is usually just around ten dealers or so.

I went there Saturday, and bought a 1926 Peace Dollar for $19.

These 2 northern NJ coin shows are tomorrow February 16th. Thinking of trying one of them out. Anybody attended either ? Anybody thinking of going tomorrow ?

Clifton is 95 minutes each way, and I've got a local coin club meeting at 1:00 too, so I'm staying local. BUT, there is a colonial copper dealer that lives in the area and may be there. Real nice guy, gave me lots of info. Had maybe 30 coins or so, which is apparently alot for that type of stuff.

I went to the Wyoming Valley coin club show in Pittston PA. yesterday. A good amount of dealers, and pretty crowded. It is on again today if anyone is interested.

That seems silly. Why wouldn't they combine it into one show?

The Wichita Coin and Stamp show was this weekend. Good group of dealers and a nice selection of coins. A couple of larger regional dealers brought some higher grade of coins. You don't always see early high grade Walkers at local shows.

The first Sunday of the month is when my LCS meets at an American Legion hall here in Independence, Missouri. Usually has about 20 or so vendors covering coins of all types, although there are seldom any ancients.

And does anyone know about shows around Orlando, Florida? I'm going there in the middle of April and it would be nice to see what there is.

I went to the 3-day Lakeland, Florida Collecto-Rama annual show on Friday (first day). Usually about 100 dealers including fossils, gems and jewelry but mostly coins. Noticeably fewer dealers than in past years, maybe 80% of usual but the walk-in trade seemed about normal. I picked up a 1723 Woods Hibernia Farthing but the other coins I looked at, the ask prices were very high so I didn't even make an offer. OTOH, a friend of mine picked up several coins and some currency and felt like he was very successful.

To John Skelton's question: There is a monthly coin show at the Maitland Civic Center which is on the north side of Orlando. It is held the first Sunday of every month. About 40 dealers.

Then there is the South Brevard Coin Club Coin Show (I'm a member) held the second Sunday of every month. It is held at the Azan Shrine Center on Eau Gallie Blvd. on the east coast in Melbourne, Florida. Usually about 40 to 50 dealers.

If you tell me what you're interested in, I might be able to opine on the typical availability. Both shows have the usual mix of Morgans, bullion, common raw material, common slabbed material, a little bit of foreign material, a bit of ancient, a bit of gold but not much, a bit of jewelry. Very little early copper or colonial. Occasionally, you can find some unusual stuff, or nice type. A couple of months ago, I found a nice AU53 uncut Continental Currency 1778 $5 and $7 from a dealer I'd not seen before. Neither show has an entry fee and both have plentiful and free parking.

You can get more details on both shows off a Google search.

I'm going to be in Florida for a week starting April 17th so I will miss those shows. I might check out coin shops in the Lake Mary area. Maybe I can convince my relatives to gift me with a nice Morgan for my birthday while I'm there!

Clifton World Money Show / Wayne Stamp & Coin Show:

I went to both of these shows today, and Physics makes a good point: these 2 shows should COMBINE and either have it at 1 venue or alternate. The reasons being....

CLIFTON: Not great parking around this place so if you go be prepared to walk 1-2 minutes to the Rec Center. There were about 15-18 dealers with maybe 50-60 glass cases. But I only found 2 dealers with stuff of interest; 1 had some modern bullion the other had the 1 Saint (MS63 for $1,875; can't remember the date, maybe 1915 or 1913). Rest of the dealers had junk bins or stuff 1 notch above that. Lots of books with lower-end coins....2x2" white squares....some Morgans. Some stamps and basecall cards and miscellaneous. Not much in the way of modern bullion, slabbed or raw.

WAYNE: Maybe 10 dealers and only 1 guy had stuff, though not bad: a few common Saints, some Libertys, some Indian Heads. Almost bought a raw Reverse Proof Maple Leaf but it had multiple milk spots. Not much in the way of modern bullion, slabbed or raw. More than 1/2 the show was stamps with tons of stamp stuff covering multiple tables. 1 guy had a few raw ancients; another guy had raw and graded ones from $200-$600.

I just thought of something: the last 3 of these small, downscale NJ shows I've been to the last 2 weekends hasn't had EVEN ONE CAC coin !! :wideyed: You're definitely dealing in a different clientele where not only are higher-end coins not available (you're lucky to find a quality Morgan or generic Saint) but you're not going to find CAC versions. For that, you have to go to the Mt. Kisco, Westchester (maybe), and Parsippany shows in the area.

PhysicsFan makes a great suggestion. I have to assume that these people are covering their costs and/or making enough $$$ that they don't want to drive an extra 15-30 minutes to combine forces and have a bigger show together. Next time I go (?) or see one of these deales at another show I will definitely ask them if that has been discussed.

Trevose, PA is this Sunday, the 23rd. Sister show to Burlington, NJ, many dealers set up at both, but there are unique for both spots. Four dealers, if not more sell gold, several high end dealers, the toner guy, and some random other people. THere's one guy that travels extensively that was at the last one.

I guess these shows are "profitable" for these small local dealers, else they'd have stopped years ago.

But I do wonder, because even the dealer-to-dealer buying and selling that Doug talks about can't be happening much at these shows since there are so few dealers with inventory.

A lot of the business at these types of small shows is dealer-to-collector. There will be some dealer-to-dealer, but much less than at a big show. Many of the dealers at a small show like these are going to be part-time dealers, or maybe even just a collector who has surplus they are trying to get rid of. Sure, you'll have some full time dealers, and if you're lucky a specialist or two will show up. But these shows are for lower-budget collectors, primarily.

Yup, you nailed it. And I guess with table fees of $50-$150 it doesn't take much to cover their expenses. Alot different than going to FUN where the fees are a few hundred a day...transportation....hotels....you probably are out $1,000 before you even set up.

Great time at Trevose yesterday, Lots of gold changing hands, at least two dealers had the full spread of AGE; 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 ounce. Many others had their assortment of gold coins out. I guess the price is up?

The Morgan people were there, 3 or four cases of shiny.

Couple high end dealers that didn't even acknowledge me when I approached. Meh.

Ended up getting some Ikes at melt, and a 1975 10 peso Cuban commemmorative.
Almost bought one of those black eagle dollars that has Lincoln and Grant on it, but seemed expensive for having two holes from a staple on it.

    Didn't see any colonials.

    Made a new friend too.

So true. The dealer I see at my small coin show also has a small booth at an antique mall. Plus at the show half of his wares are coin storage supplies.

    And you're right, I AM a low-budget collector!
