How good is CoinTalk compared to the TPGs? Let's find out! Over the next several months, I'll be posting a continuous stream of Guess the Grade threads. I will be using photos from the Heritage auction archives (please do not cheat!).

All you have to do is guess the grade! I will be attaching a poll to each thread. Please select the grade that you think best represents the coin (to avoid bias, please select your grade before viewing the rest of the thread).

Also feel free to post your opinions about the coin, and it would be most educational if you could explain why you chose the grade you did.

In order to give everyone time to respond, I'll reveal the grade Monday evening

Around Christmas, I will tally up the results and see how we did. This thread is an offshoot of a recent thread where I compared CT grading to the TPG, seen here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/how-good-is-cointalk-at-grading.343417/

We're going to cover a wide range of material, and some of it may be out of your wheelhouse. However, if you are a confident grader, you should be able to accurately grade almost any coin.

OK, first out of the chute. Probably my ignorance will be on full display. I'm going MS64, maybe PL. Too much acne on her face for a 65 IMHO.

I voted 64. Although a 65 would not surprise me at all.

I'll go with an ms63. I'm not an expert, but there appear to be too many scratches to get to ms64 or ms65. Additionally, the hair appears to be a bit flatter than ms64 examples I've seen in the past.

From a macro perspective, this coin looks like an MS65, but when you zoom in, there is just too much chatter in the focal areas to warrant a gem grade. I think this is the in between grade coin that deserves an MS64+ grade.

    Since that isn’t an option.

    MS64

    64 (a 64+ coin in my mind)

I voted MS63. Looks very close to the last coin posted. Better date in MS, though the market value of it has dropped over the last few years. Nice splash if color, great reverse, typical chatter on the obverse for a 63.

    64. No better. The cheek holds it there, even with decent eye appeal otherwise.

    I thought 63-face, but 65-fields, so chose 64.
I'd say it would grade 65 now.
Of course....in hand inspection could change perspective.

I haven't posted + or PL options because they are just more complicated to account for numerically, and a poll is limited to 10 options.

I’m not criticizing, but am purposefully stating that my grade would be MS64+.

A-because, maybe more than 1 coin graded 63.
