Agreed. On the First Roman Silver coin, the ROMANO legend is about the highest point on the coin. I PREFER coins being gently worn, so getting the legend in tact AND having pleasant wear was tough. And, of course, within my costing parameters. This one was a fun coup for me.
Yep, I was just thinking I should try to assemble the AE versions. They are just as appealing, or nearly so, and far more affordable. I don't really care if they aren't silver, as the symbolism and artistry are more important to me (besides, "common" folk used the AEs, and that's right up my social history alley!).
I have almost all of the Litrae in various conditions (I may be missing 1 or 2 of the versions). I have almost all of the Quadrigatii Didrachm versions, and one Drachm. And have about half of the RR Didrachmae designs. All worn and have been transacted by folks (which I like, as the wear makes the coin "real" to me).
I would love to get my hands on one of these: http://cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=15205# And, ditto on "the real" factor!
That is very nice! I have not seen that, and want it. I feel the same as they wrote: I am NOT sure the RR's called them Litrae, as the units are the same size dimensions as the Quartuncia and Semuncia (I have them, and they are all the same size). I think the Romans minted these to use in their excursions into influencing or conquering Magna Graecia. The same as the Victoriatus being the same as a Drachm... using them with Magna Graecia, NOT as Roman coinage.
Hmmm, This thread went from definitely 'odd' to outright gorgeous... WOW @panzerman, that's a stunning coin...and since I just lost out on a silver version I can't blame you LOL LOVE the horse heads guys!!! But it seems all of my 'types' are pre-godfather and totally intact
