Did you HONESTLY expect to find an 1889CC or 1893S in mint condition? As I had said previously, it is a roll of common date coins, as these rolls always end up being. I do feel bad for you, but one has to learn from their mistakes. Figure that you could resell the coins individually, and recover part of your money. However, eBay won't do anything about this, as these auctions take in novice collectors all the time, and this is a bit of a "buyer beware" situation. Experienced collectors would never touch anything like this, so recover what you can, and treat it as an expensive learning experience.

That does not matter, sir, and the reason I am saying this is because I believe your approach questionable. Again, in no way do I wish to see you lose one cent on this transaction, not because you have no part in the blame (you do) but because of the nature of this type of offering. The seller dangled a baited hook in front of you, and instead of nibbling, you swallowed the whole damn thing and did so more than once. It would be nice to see the original listing, but may I ask if you compared the listing photos to the roll that arrived, in detail, verifying it was exactly as shown? The reason I ask is that sellers of salted or thrown-together rolls will sometimes, after the listing ends and the price is known, place coins insideto give the appearance of better value. Basically, if a roll sells for gis idea of cheap, he will fill with complete junk to maximize his profit, but if it sells high, fill it with halfway decent material in an attempt to convince the buyer that while they didn't score, they got some decent coins and that the roll was legit, perhaps causing them to roll the dice again. My point with this is that regardless of eBay's excessive buyer coddling and stupidity-promoting policies, using only a debatable toning issue as your basis for demanding a refund, may not be helping your case as much as you'd like. I don't know how much eBay would look into this, but know that it has been said before that forum threads were provided as evidence in other disputes; if true, this one would not reflect well upon you. It may not matter in the end, but I would still tread carefully and not do or say anything that could come back, no matter low much of a long shot it may be, to bite you.

Just read the seller's return policy-- he does not accept returns on opened rolls due to scammers. That should have been a red flag to any collector. Sounds like eBay will do nothing, as he made clear his return policy. Others have fallen for this old numismatic rouse, obviously. Expect no latitude from the seller, nor eBay-- not as if the seller didn't warn that it would be a roll of schlock. Too bad you were victimized, but the seller did make clear that once opened, no returns. Basically, this was a sucker's grab bag, and others have fallen for it as well. Also read the bait that there could be good dates in the roll. This translates to the fact that a seller offered a roll that was clearly selected to have nothing special in it, enticed buyers with a "win the lottery" pitch, and buyers went for it. Ethical-- not likely. Illegal-- no lawyer here, but the no return policy speaks for itself.

Yep, I understand. Sucks. So word of advice for everyone who comes across this thread in the future, don't bid on the rolls.

Not that I think you are, but don't give up as that's exactly what the seller (and ALL seller of this type of thing) want you to do. As mentioned before, eBay's excessive buyer coddling policy MAY save you, but if not there are other options. Hint: the last thing this guy probably wants is for potential customers, with the stoke of a key, to easily learn the truth behind his offerings. You said you would tape and share the opening here, but there are other forums as well. If need be make him ask himself if the profits from this one sale are worth a headache that will continue until you feel that you've gotten your money worth in satisfaction of outing him everywhere to everyone. I am not saying this will work, but IF eBay does not come to your rescue, you've nothing to lose. In times past and until learning of their actions, I once sold to guys who pulled stunts like this, and the one constant I observed was that none wanted their wares to be openly discussed, even in person among locals, and the internet has a memory that lasts much longer and is much less forgiving.

I closed out my return requests. It is entirely my fault for bidding. I'm not a scammer, I'm just a moron with a lot to learn.

I sent the seller one final message. They can keep all the money I spent, but they're going to get some negative feedback to warn others against buying their rolls.

Man, it may not be any of my business what you do, but walking away is a POOR decision. Even though I am very big on personal responsibility in this hobby, don't listen to those telling you to just suck up the loss; learn a lesson, yes, but reward this schmuck with a payday, no. A negative simply isn't enough, and depending on how much this guy moves, might not matter once off the first page. It is your choice, of course, but if you and everyone else taken advantage of fought instead of walking away, this hobby and business would be the better for it.

Oh I never had any doubt that he was a con man. All I was doing was trying to point out to people, meaning anyone who ever reads this thread, that claiming what they got after the purchase was not an unsearched original roll - is not a viable claim, not a valid reason to justify a return. And why that is true.

And that applies to all of the offers like these, not just to rolls of Morgans. Any roll of coins can be an unsearched original roll.

This is when you need to have a credit card linked to your PayPal and do a chargeback or stop payment or however they allow you to save your skin.

I also believe the old saying 'caveat emptor' is in order. Gotta be on your toes.

Any roll could, but when the seller rolled the coins they are not. This is not a court room no one here has to prove what we already know. It is a scam

Huge mistake. Tell eBay the toning on the coin looks like a coin toned in a bag not a roll and push for a sent not as described. There is a 90+% chance eBay roll refund your money. Many people on cointalk think that it is ok for someone to lie about coins and it is the buyers fault for buying. I do not. I believe that if you say something about your coins (they are original) and the seller rolled the coins then it is fraud and the buyer is not at fault. More importantly eBay also believes as i do. It doesn't matter what a couple of coin posting guys say about you having to take a loss and learn your lesson. You do not and eBay will back you. I know this from experience. DO NOT TAKE A LOSS YOU DO NOT HAVE TO.

Please don't take this as a statement about your ability to grade but there is no way any of your coins will grade 65 cleanly. You will find that any coin that could have been valuable to be either cleaned or at. DO NOT TAKE A LOSS AND WALK AWAY EBAY WILL BACK YOU ON THIS REFUND!!!

Private message me I'll tell you what I did in this exact same situation to get my money back and eBay backed me. I even wrote about it here

How can I prove in any fashion that they rolled it themselves? It's a losing battle and the seller could easily take me to court over it, considering this is thousands of dollars.

I certainly cannot speak for everyone here, but I can for myself. I do not believe that it is okay to lie about a coin, but it is also not okay to be ignorant about the coin one is purchasing and then place ALL blame upon the seller when an obvious pig in a poke turns out to be just that. Likewise, this constantly reminding anyone and everyone who may stumble upon one of these threads that all they have to do, be it to protect their own stupidity/ignorance, get out of a bad gamble, or even to try to get a freebie coin, is to run to big poppa eBay and complain is simply wrong. Yes, eBay should do what it can to protect a buyer such as this fellow, but not everyone is like him, and just as there are bad sellers, there are many, many more bad buyers out there and these people do not need to constantly be reminded how easy it can be to rip off a seller.

The seller still hasn't responded. I'm hoping they'll give me some partial refund but not even holding my breath.

As they say, "gotta pay to play." This was an expensive game, I took the gamble on rolls that I thought looked okay, but in hindsight the toning was wrong (not from being on the end of a roll) as mentioned and there were only common dates/mints.

I knew what I was getting into, the fault is my own. Had there been some negative feedback, I would have never bought from the seller. I saw all positives, and it made me think maybe it was legit. Now I know. Hopefully, we all know now. Nothing further to say on this guys.
