Some good info in here. Thanks for all the comments. I have seen the other guy's listings before too. I never thought to look at my iPhone app and see if I can see the feedback for private ones. From what was posted it does appear that he shills his bids. If I could win the lottery I'd buy one of the rolls just to see what was in them. Since they are covered by the eBay protection you would most certainly get your money back and maybe get to keep the roll of Morgans. Do that a few times and maybe justice would be served!! lol.
I am sorry, but how not-classy of you, and this has little to do with taking advantage of someone looking to take advantage. The schmoes that sell this dreck are what they are, and I think most of us realize this, but the idea of using eBay policy, intentionally, to rip someone off is just as if not more pitiful than the guys offering sucker bait in the first place. Anyone who actually buys this kind of thing (or the near countless other types of junk sold every day) do so by choice. More often than not, with a few minutes invested towards researching a potential purchase, buyers could educate themselves enough to see that this (or whatever) really is, so if they don't bother, they've only themselves to blame; there's only two more keys to press when typing google than ebay. Ebay's protection policy, aside from being very self serving, isn't there for you to be judge and jury against a seller even though there are many who may arguably deserve a little tit for tat coming their way.
I hate that private listing crap. Why does ebay allow it when all listings block the bidders IDs, but you can at least view their bidding history with the seller.
Well this will be interesting. I actually bought a few of these rolls Should get them in very very soon. I looked at the jhonecash website and compared the colors and believed it all looked fine. The toning color progression looks correct. There hasn't been just "one" person who won all of the auctions, some have won more than one - but then again so did I. So there are a few things that will be interesting to find out. 1) Are there any rare dates in the rolls, or all common? 2) Are the end coins rare dates? 3) Is the toning natural, or AT? Besides that, the definition of "original" is very loose. Original could mean from mint, from bank, or from the original owner - or anything really. "Unopened" is hard to argue with, because the paper roll itself could have had the coins inserted and never been opened again, thus it is "unopened" however it's not unsearched. Then again, whoever placed the coins into the rolls must have looked at them or knew what they were putting in, unless they truly had no clue? The auction states they opened some of the rolls and didn't find anything older than 1904. None of the feedback gives specifics on rarities either. I believe the only person, or people, who truly know what are in these rolls, is the eBay seller and the "retired banker" who they were bought from (doesn't state if they were dead or alive when purchased). I am new on this forum, but if you guys promise not to judge me, I'll video tape the unraveling of these rolls I bought. Then everyone can see what they really contain. If I'm close to breaking even in terms of value, I'll send the end coins in (and any of potential value) to PCGS to have them graded. Again though, I'm not sure what is going to happen and I just plead with you to not flame me or make me feel like an idiot... my wife will surely do a good enough job of that if this turns out to be a massive bust. Thanks.
Please do take a video! I would love to see the outcome. It is a curious thing. I hope you do end up doing well!
Thanks, I'm not ruling out the possibility of filing a complaint with eBay if it's bad. But I'm not wanting to keep the coins if they're bad either, I mean if I need a refund because it's totally bunk then I'll happily send them in. Not looking to rip anyone off, but at the same time I'm not dropping all of this money on these rolls to get scammed by buying AT coins etc. I'm hoping for the best and feeling a little sick and anxious, from not knowing if I made a huge mistake. If I do have to file a complaint, I won't be providing anyone with the item #s because obviously I have to protect myself first and foremost. You will all see the video of the unrolling though.
@bsupercharged , welcome to the forums. As a fellow Morgan collector, I'll be very interested to watch your video. I learned my lesson about "unsearched" rolls and for that reason, am 99% skeptical anytime I see one on eBay. Thankfully, they were buffalo nickel rolls and my lesson was cheap. As @GDJMSP stated in his post, Morgans never left the mint in rolls. You covered the literal interpretation of the sellers listing well, so I'll just stop here. Again, welcome and I'd love to see the video and will cast no aspersions your way.
@Jwt708 thanks for that information, so in this case "original" has no base definition. Nobody can argue they are original, or are not original, since they didn't originally come in rolls. @jpcienkus I appreciate the welcome and I've had mixed results with sight unseen unsearched rolls/bags. Mostly bad. Though in a few cases I did get some fairly decent coins - they're "rare" coins for a reason. If they were common and you bought an unsearched bag and ended up with a lot of rare coins, then that'd just be really good dumb luck. Or, you got the bag/roll that the previous owner held dear to them and knew it contained the cream of the crop.
Just go ahead and read this post. Those rolls are a scam and the seller is hoping to get someone naïve/ignorant/new/unknowledgeable enough to buy them, just hoping the buyer believes the seller really doesn't have time to sort through 20 - 25 Morgans.
Lol why would anyone buy multiple rolls on a gamble. Seller seems to always have them listed all the time could have got one then came back for more. I don't get why you won't share the item ID# even though we can't see specifics about your identity based off it anyway the listings are private. But you are willing to video tape opening the rolls and share that. I wouldn't be surprised to see a video posted showing all the gems pulled from this mystery rolls which in turn hooks a few more sales for the seller. And if you aren't associated with the seller are you really naive enough to believe a seller that sells primarily coins happened upon an old bankers 'hoard' and didn't actually look through the rolls? If he bought them off the banker who knew what he had in the rolls why would the banker take a loss and sell them as mystery rolls. Absolutely no returns if the rolls have been opened lol and how would the seller know that unless they know what's in the rolls to begin with.
Not sure why my post didn't show up, guess I wasn't logged in from my phone. I won't share the item #s until after this is all "done" - thats right. Tell me what I have to gain by putting it out there and letting someone tell the seller what I'm doing, or the seller finding out before I'm ready to take action (if it goes to that)? Nothing. There's a saying: "A fool tells you what he will do. A boaster what he has done. A wise man does it and says nothing." I'm going to post the video of the unrolling but I'm not going to give any information that could let them identify me or whatever, until I'm ready to do so. As for mystery rolls, I don't see how it's much different from the unopened GSA Morgan CC boxes; you know there is a Morgan inside, but you don't know much else. Maybe it's a good rare coin, maybe it's a common coin. Now, I completely realize that maybe these rolls have been searched and handled and are fraudulent listings, claiming toned coins that are original and unopened, while they're actually common coins that have been artificially toned. Maybe, maybe not. I'm interested in finding out, and hope I don't get sandbagged too hard. As I said though, I don't need to be chewed out or questioned over it, I made the purchases and that is either my fault or my luck, depending on whats inside the rolls. Nobody up until this point has provided ANY proof that they've bought one and opened it, all that can be said is "those rolls are a scam" - well if you don't open it how do you know for a fact? I'm taking all of the risk out of this for everyone who wanted to know. I will totally understand the skepticism if there actually turns out to be a rare coin in one of the rolls, and I know I'm a new member so "who can trust this guy" - that's fine. Just like the stock market, prior performance doesn't guarantee future results. I'm not saying to buy these rolls, I'm saying - let me open the ones I bought, and show you what's inside. If I do get something it shouldn't be used to entice people to buy the rolls, it's just a "this is what I got, your mileage may vary". Not sure how else I can say it, I'm doing it to inform people of what's actually in these rolls.
Thanks I'm just on edge from potentially regretting the purchases is all. Could be one of the most expensive lessons I ever learn if everything just goes bad.
The rolls shipped from BRAINERD, MN 56401 , priority mail + registered. At least they cover their bases with the insurance portion.
I wish you the best of luck @bsupercharged, but I have a sneaking suspicion that you may be very disappointed in what you find. Please do share your video though, I promise not to say told you so. And welcome to CT, you don't have to worry here, we just like to collect, talk about our coins and poke a little fun at each others expense. Really just in good fun though.
