I don't. In fact, it isn't uncommon for me to throw a penny or two on the ground. They aren't worth the space they take up. I would keep it if it was a wheatie of course. And I'm starting to have second thoughts about the copper ones.
Every time for sure, free money. Wife keeps found heads up penny's in her " good luck " jar. She will not pick up a face down cent tho, I will.
Sure do, I figure every cent I pick up is a free 1/4 mile worth of gas. Came out of the convienience store this morning and picked up three miles in free gas. (Motorcycles are great.)
I pick up every single one. Although, while leaving the grocery store the other day, I found a penny on the ground. I couldn't keep it seeing as how the salvation army bell ringer was right there within a few feet. I figured at best, someone dropped it while getting change out to throw in the bucket. so I tossed it in along with a few more from my own pocket.
I notice I find a lot more pennies than other coins. I'm guessing that if some coins accidentally come out of the pocket while getting the car keys, the person will pick up everything but the pennies. I have seen a guy pull out his coins and just throw all the pennies on the parking lot.
As I stated earlier I pick them up every time but I can remember when I didn't. In Junior High School after lunch a lot us would lounge on the bench outside the cafeteria and toss "pennies" on the floor. Gus, our favorite janitor, would pick up every single one of them. Yeah we were rotten kids. Now considering there were three lunch periods Gus got this treatment three times a day, five days a week. I'm betting the tradition continued as well till he retired. So you got a bunch of smart a** kids tossing money on the floor. Gus didn't mind I'll bet he put at least an extra $5 in his pocket every week from this and this was in the mid 70's. Now that I think about who was the smart one here?
I always pick them up because a cup of coffee is $1.02 and I go through a lot of cents to avoid breaking bills.
I used to work in a resturant that had two dining rooms, one for familys andone where the young people hung out. Every time they bought something and got their change back the cents went on the floor. Then after closing I'd go over and sweep up. I never had to buy my own gas, those nice people over there always bought it for me. I could usually pick up enough for twenty miles or so of gas every night.
Would you be surprised then Jack to learn that the last time I ever examined my pocket change was about 1966 ?
YIKES !!! Not even a cursory glance as it's handed to you? I make the wife save it all in a jar untill I go thru it, she knows about Rpm's, small dates, copper/zinc etc now because of that.
Not even a cursory glance - ever. I have saved change for years, then when I get a lot just cash it in. Then I would buy coins that I actually wanted with that money. Ya see, I never collected circulated coins except when I was a kid, and I quit that at 13. Of course when I switched to collecting world coinage, I had to collect circulated since most of them don't even exist in unc. But when I could find them in unc, I bought 'em
I don't collect or save modern stuff. If a coin isn't silver or gold or minted before about 1950 I won't collect it unless it is a key of some sort.
