I am not sure what this coin is or if I am even supposed to post it under this thread. Please ignore my ignorance I am really new at this but will do my best . please tell me to hit the trail if I did something I was not supposed to do! Could you help me identify this coin and is it from the group of coins posted.
Can you read what is on the front (obverse) of the coin? Like, it probably starts with "DN..." And putting what you read into Google will help you in you search. Also, try doing that with the back (reverse) as the back is REALLY helpful in ID'ing a coin. PS, I think the next couple letters after DN are VAL...
Thank you very much .mine has the letter P and I do believe it is identical to the one you posted . thanks a million .
thanks everyone for the help ! Your a great bunch on this site , and will need to rely on your intelligence in the near future again. Fantastic !
I don't have too many roman coins from the 5th century. But here's one of my favorites. An Honorius AE3. I just like the sandy patina. Even though the obverse suffers from a slight double vision effect on the front of the portrait. Honorius; AD 393-423 AE3; 19mm/2.7g, Czyicus Mint OBV; DN HONORIVS P M AVG; Pearl diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right REV: VIRTVS EXERCITI; Honorius standing facing right, holding spear and resting hand on shield, crowned by Victory standing L beside him; SMKB in exergue (RIC X 68)
A small selection of late AE2s, either minted in Cherson, or in Constantinople for Cherson. (Hard to find, especially the Val III; thanks to @Valentinian for fixing me up with these.) Theodosius II: Leo I: Valentinian III:
Highlights for me in this thread include: • The nice Leo in the OP • @Pellinore's Marcian • @David@PCC's Zeno (how do you tag him properly? The "@" always causes me trouble...) (edit: looks like it worked this time!) • @dougsmit's Anastasius pre-reform • @panzerman's zeno • @7Calbrey's horseback pair Nice thread!!
Here are a couple of later Romans ... one's tough to find the other is just odd Basiliscus: Obv: ...BASLC AV.. (tiny coin and a name with too many letters) Rev: Monogram Leo / Marcian: Obv: DN LEO PF AVG; bust right Rev: Monogram of Marcian; star above I don't know why but I really like this coin. Most likely barbarous but it's done very well.
