Watching The Last Kingdom on Netflix revived my interest in English hammered pennies, especially those the difficult ones from before Henry III.

Well, let's just say that January has been a very, very spendy month for me. However, I'm really happy to add these two early kings to my collection. Hoping that the attachment goes through but in case it doesn't it's the first two at

I'd be interested in buying other members' coins if it goes into one of the missing holes.... I'm on the hunt for a portrait Eadwig :-D

I normally don't really care for English hammered coins, but how can one not like the early Saxon era pennies? I think the portraits of these early coins have far more character than the later 13th and 14th century counterparts.

That is a very nice collection of British hammered coins. Your Henry IV is a very respectable coin. He is a tough one.

Here are 3 of my favorite hammered coins.

I watched The Last Kingdom last month and it inspired me to window shop English hammered pennies. What a fantastic series!

The books the series is based on are even better!

Really great show, waiting for the 4th season to come out (late 2019?) Also like how the protagonist is supposedly a descendant of the line that ruled Bernicia (Northern half of Northumbria). My only hammered English coin is this Henry III long cross silver penny. I don’t even know where to start with early or “dark ages” English coins.

Nice job with the Aethelwulf and Edward the Martyr. The Aethelwulf looks like a very nice piece, and the Edward, even with the rim damage, has great central detail and an overall nice look. Both good additions. Good luck on your quest, from looking at your set it looks like you have made some great progress!

I don't have an Edward and my only Aethelwulf is a nonportrait coin:

My own collecting goals are somewhat ambitious, I want an example of every Anglo-Saxon king. Impossible, of course, but gives me a target. Several lesser-known kings only have one or two coins of theirs known and they are in museums.

I think you'll be hard pressed to find a portrait Eadwig. Unique coin with the only known example in the British Museum.

    Here is my non-portrait Eadwig:

I enjoy the Last Kingdom but fell behind a season and need to catch up!

Thanks guys for your input. I'm saving my pennies for the day an Egbert or Aethelbert shows up. I make it harder on myself by wanting only portrait coins and can't be fragments. Eadwig will evidently be an exception :)

Nap, do you have any portrait coins of the early Aethels* and Eads*?

    Hi Suarez,

I have a few of the Wessex portrait pennies but not too many. They get expensive!

Here are Aethelberht, Aethelred I, and Eadred:

    Oh. My. God.

Happy to buy these off of you if, y'know, the ol' college fund for the kids starts looking a little thin or something :-D

I'll have to look for the show The Last Kingdom. Sounds good.

Here are a couple of Anglo Saxon coins from my collection. I love English hammered coins.
