"To be fair, here's a word from the font itself McSweeney's on Comic Sans" That's the funniest thing I've read in a long time! I laughed out loud. Thanks for the belly laughs TIF.
I find it interesting that coins of this period are more common seen plated than many periods earlier and later. I wonder if this might suggest some being issued by the other side during civil wars but there will never be proof. Years ago an elderly collector told me of seeing three Ides Mar fourrees in a drawer of one London dealer who would not sell them due to the then prevalent disrespect for fourrees in general (they would have thrown all of these out). Certainly some but not all were simple types so would be easier to engrave believable dies but I tend to suspect that is a minor factor on why there are so many Imperatorial fourrees.
Great coins everyone! @IdesOfMarch01, your coins are very complementary to my collection: I'm still searching for nearly every one of the coins you've posted, especially your Cleopatra denarius which is an exceptional example of the type (and, of course, your JC aureus). Well spotted! I have indeed recently managed to rephotograph my JC denarius. It had eluded me for quite some time, but now I'm finally satisfied with its images.
Good luck in your quest. Just remember when you finally acquire any of them, don't use Comic Sans when you post them here!
Truly amazing posts!!! Hopefully, I can add a meager example or two of a budget JC, Brutus or Pompey issue that I'm still bidding on.... All you guys and gals have some utterly fantastic coins!!!
Gorgeous coin, Severatus...any I win on bid in a day or so will pale in comparison to almost all I have seen so far....but I'll be content to finally own an example like all those posted.
Agreed. His coins, photography, and write-ups are very good. To be fair, many of you ancient guys and gals make outstanding contributions to this site that I'm only too glad to view.
Here are my two belated postings from an Agora auction #29 that just ended. Inexplicably, I won all three coins that I bid only at minimum required (and another I had on a 'watch-list' became a moot issue); usually I lose out on all three in such circumstances. I now suspect my 'budget' examples are less of a 'bargain' than a more accurate rendering of 'fair market price' for the type---despite being considerably under the 'buy now' or 'estimate' values. Regardless, I'm very happy to finally add two budget examples of this type to my collection. Brutus as Proconsul. AR Denarius (3.24 gm) of 42 BC by Sestius. Bust of Libertas right/Tripod between axe and simpulum. Junia.37 Cr.502/2. Toned, Fine+ Bankers AE's mark Pompey the Great. (45 BC and later) AE AS (26.0 gm) Janiform head, left face has the features of Pompey/Prow of ship. Wul-68 Cr.479/1. Fine, green patina, smoothing in fields.
the pompey janiform is very cool MZ. fantastic coins everyone. i don't have have a single coin that really fits here.
