As I said, I got the prices direct from Heritage - real, actual, realized auction prices. It's kind of hard to argue with those. And if PCGS got their data from the same place I did - I'd say their data is pretty good. It's also kind of hard to argue with the fact that the trends of the actual prices paid match the trends of the graph, which is what I claimed they would do. And it sure sounded to me like you claimed they would not. And when you say -

May I ask why the realized price numbers are going to match the chart and yet all earlier numbers are going to be wrong ? The logic of that escapes me.

Now you stll wish to believe that the indexes and the graphs are bogus. OK, you can do that. But I have presented evidence, real fatcs, that they are not bogus. Nonetheless, I never expected you to change your mind in the face of something like facts.

No, in the few hours I had this evening, I could not find any records going back much farther than 2001. Heritage has some records going back to 1994, but only for 1 or 2 of the grades and not for both coins.

Now, just because Heritage doesn't have on-line records for realized auction prices going back later than 2001, that doesn't mean that such records don't exist. When you say -

You are sadly mistaken. There are plenty of auction records going back to the 1950's and beyond, but you're not gonna find them on-line. And when you say it doesn't reflect lower end coins - what do you call F12 if that's not lower end coins ?

And frankly, I'm not going to spend countless hours doing research to prove my point when you are still going to deny it no matter what I present as evidence. It seems pretty obvious to me that you are only going to believe what you want to believe.

How many times do I have to point out that there are no records for MS64 and MS66 coins prior to 1977? So where did PCGS get the data for MS64 and MS66 coins in the index for 1970? Either the graph doesn't include them in the early 70's or PCGS made them up. That makes any conclusion drawn from that graph inaccurate and misleading. Again, you can't explain the discrepancy I pointed out in my example BECAUSE THE DATA USED WAS NOT COMPATIBLE!

In case you haven't noticed, I agree with you that the part of the graph that can be verified is reasonably accurate based on the data used. Unfortunately, only certain segments of the market are included and therefore it does not represent the entire market.

Hey, just because I'm as stubborn as you doesn't mean I can't be convenienced otherwise, but it takes verifiable facts to change my mind. Even though the Red Book values aren't accurate to the dollar, they are useful in showing the general trend and you should know that to be true. Since you can't come up with anything better, I rest my case.
