Hey all! See if my computer will let me get this posted. I was able to check the PCGS pop reports, and after checking them, and looking at it again, I change my guess to MS-67. Looks like it was missing some luster, but I change my mind. New guess: MS-67. Hopefully I'l be able to stick around a little longer. Thanks dak.

Grade changes allowed for 5 more minutes then I will see if anyone nailed it... If not, I'll award the close grade winners!

No more edits, I am now going and checking the grades, back in a few...

Ok... Well... I can't extend it again... Once again, some were close, but none correct... PCGS Grade MS61.. Members within 1 grade:

    Spock1k :MS60 10 points awarded this round
Daggarjon : MS60 10 Points awarded this round

Phoenix21: First guessed MS62 but later changed his grade to MS67 , I have to accept his last grade offered and can not award him points for his first guess that was closer that he posted through Coinman.

Now you owe us an explanation - please. Personally, that coin was just too clean for me to think it was 61. I could not figure the luster. Your photos looked like there was none, but the microscope looked like it was all there.

Ok, My in hand evaluation of the coin, First off it has some unattractive brown toning spots on the obverse, around the cheek and in the hair. The luster is all there, no breaks that would constitute a downgrade to AU58. But it is not as bright as the LED lighting from the microscope would have you believe. The main problem encountered with this coin for grading is it has a lot ( 10+) small knicks and bag marks on the higher parts of the design as well as many hidden amongst the hair, while most are small they are there none the less and they don't show up well in photos, but are extremely evident in hand and they glare at you through a 7x loupe. The strike is somewhat light, but this was typical of 1928P. The Mint was starting to use chromium-plated dies introduced this year, so the overall strike is not anywhere near as horrible as previous years. But nonetheless for the year this example does tend to be a bit soft. I think PCGS did a good job on this one. Lately I have been seeing a lot of these lower MS grade slabs housing coins that ( in my opinion) are obvious AU58 so I am always delighted when I see coins well graded.

My Buffalo collection is in the works, I'm currently at 24 of the 64 needed (excluding varieties) my goal is to complete the set in MS60 - MS62 .. Even dates that are common in higher grades, I seek out the low MS examples, weird I know as most try to get the best coins they can afford, but I want a consistant, nicely matched set. That is my goal and my pleasure... And while I have to wait on deals for the keys, it is a steady set that I'm adding to regulary.

I hope this explanation was sufficient and as you go back and re-examine the photos, maybe you'll pick up on a few of the things I've mentioned.

Lol, darn. :D I didn't pick up on those. Actually looked like a higher grade coin. I thought all that was left was MS 67, could have sworn someone guessed MS 61. That's the way the cookie crumbles. :D What's next dak?

Lol, went back through the list, a bit of a good thing it wasn't graded MS-67, 8 people guessed that. :D Suspicous. :D Lol, joking. Myself thought it was only one left. Pretty funny though. :D

I, and at least one other, did CHANGE our guess to 61 AFTER dak's post. I later changed mine to 67. I did not catch who the other was or what he changed it to.

Thats what made the guessing confusing. I had a list and had rims cent down for ms61, and all the other MS grades..thats why I went to MS67, it wasn't picked. I also didnt pick MS68 because PCGS listed '0' :)

There should have been new posts made by each

SO...I noticed those brown areas but because I know nothing about grading, didnt know how much they de-graded a coin. I went to ebay and viewed Buffalos under all MS grades. With that said...BOY! are there alot of rip-off artists on that site selling way overgraded Buffalos!

Note to self...STAY AWAY from ebay Buffalos

    LMAO

You can say that again, the pictures are always better than the coin really is also.

There were a few Hamman where they were noticeably worn and in worse shape than Dak's, yet they claimed them to be MS-67. To people not knowing any better...its a shame

Ok... Seeing how this is dragging out a bit more than I originally anticipated, I am adding a new element to the hunt. Basically a sudden death, I will be hiding clues over the next few days, if you can find them, figure it out, there will be provisions for how you may just walk away with the gold coin with an instant award of 100 points, So its time to start panning for gold, you may just strike it rich with this one even if you don't have any points! It involves a hunt! Thats all I'll say for now, but it should add an interesting element to it!

    :)
